Can I keep two hard drives inside?

Hello! Thank you for this amazing website! I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) - EMC 2639. I would like to replace my hard drive 1TB Sata 7200 with an SSD to have a faster computer, then I was wondering if is it possible to keep both of them as internal hard drives, is it possible to do this? I would like to have the SSD for the OS etc., and the other just for storage. Would be really nice :) Thank you!

Thank you very much guys for your help! I could make a decision thanks to your suggestions. I will buy a blade SSD so that I can keep the current HD internal :))

I still need a suggestion if I can… since I checked on Amazon and I thought to take this one: addlink S70 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 SSD R/W 3400/3000MB/s Internal Solid State Drive. What do you think? And also, once I connect the blade SSD, how can I install MacOS on it? I checked on google and I found that it’s enough to press the command (cloverleaf) key and R together, and then select Install Mac OS X, then click Continue, do you find this correct? I cannot wait to have my new HD!!!

Correction: It looks that my motherboard doesn’t support this HD :-(

I’m using the app Mactracker and in hard drive there is the following: Hard Drive Interface1 - 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA), 1 - 5.0 GT/s PCIe x2

This probably means that I can use only a blade SDD PCIe x2, the NVMe PCIe Gen3x4 is too advanced for my computer. So now I need to look for another model :-(((

Hello John and Dan, I’m sorry if I still ask for info, you have been really patience. At the end I thought that I could install MacOS and Linux on an external and fast SSD. I would avoid to open the iMac, and honestly I was getting impatience because I cannot use modern SSD, and the old blade ssd are more expensive then the recent ones. I checked on forums and many people are happy with an OS on external SSD. I check the options and I thought I could buy the following:

Enclosure: https://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-NVMe-PCIe-E...

Blade SSD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07M...

Considering that I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with USB 3.0: https://support.apple.com/kb/sp688

Do you think this SSD and enclosure are going to work well with it?

Thank you VERY MUCH for your patience and help.

Here's a good reference on the different custom Apple SSD's The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

Here is the needed SSD 1TB SSD PCIe 2.0 x4 interface, 12+16 pin connector

Yes, that should work. But you won't get the max your system can offer! Look at getting a Thunderbolt 2 case OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual and standard 2.5" SSD's RAID'ed

Sadly, your system only offers one SATA port. But it does offer a PCIe blade SSD slot!

Maybe you need to re-think things. keep your current HDD and look at getting a blade SSD. Or, look at getting a Hybrid HDD (SSHD) replacing your current HD with the SSHD.

If you do pull your current HD out I would recommend getting a two bay Thunderbolt case. That way you have future options!

If you are going to be using the old hard drive for storage, I would recommend attaching it via USB as, most boards do not have enough connections to carry more than one internal hard drive. The only way you could potentially do this is if your internal logic board has a spot for a EMMC\M2 slot where you can insert a card SSD.

Hope this helps.
