Braun Thermoscan IRT 4520 POS error

My Thermoscan suddenly stopped working properly… it started to show a “Hi” message a few times and now just shows “POS” error in the LED screen. No hits or falling, was working fine.

I did replace batteries, clean contacts, change to Fº and Cº… it seems the sensor does not detect temperature.

Is there any solution to this?

Luis Caceres  (POS = position error) The infrared monitor cannot find a temperature equilibrium and allows no measurement – Clear the display by changing the probe cover. Ensure that the positioning of the probe is correct and remains stable

Hi oldturkey03, thanks for your answer, but it is not that. The probe cover is brand new… but I notice that the lens was a little bit dirty, so I cleaned it. The message in the display changes now to High (“Hi”) and POS, but when I read “Hi”, is think is like if the device needs calibration, but there is no clue about it.

I realize this thread is 5 years old, but thought I'd let you know our experience. I've owned 4 different Braun ear thermometers within 4 years because I thought they kept breaking due to that same error. The only time we get that error is on my youngest child (who has periodic fever syndrome) and has extremely high fevers....it'll read up to 104.5 - 105.1 then suddenly either read high or P05....we finally confirmed this was the issue when paramedics came to our home and thought there thermometer was reading wrong because they kept getting 105.1. So it could be you had an extremely high temperature at that moment....and Yes temperatures get this high and people do not die (for anyone that is going to respond saying that's impossible)....his doctors and ER physicians said temps can actually get up to 108 in some people and most OTC thermometers aren't calibrated to read that high so they malfunction. Also ear thermometers and rectal temperatures always read much higher than armpit or mouth. Hope this helps!

@kimberley70076 you are almost right with all of this, except this "ear thermometers and rectal temperatures always read much higher than armpit or mouth" The higher temperatures are NOT related to the thermometer but to the human anatomy. The most accurate temperature is a rectal temp (measure core temp), followed by oral temp. Axillary temps are the least accurate. Tympanic (ear) thermometers are not commonly used in clinical settings due to the need of a clear "view" to the tympanic membrane. Cerumen as well as ear canal variations interfere with that read.

«POS» = position error

If the probe has not been constantly placed in a stable position in the ear canal, a sequence of short beeps will sound, the «ExacTemp» light will go out and the display will show an error message («POS» = position error).

IRT 4520: Clear the display by pushing the «I/O» button once. Take care that the positioning of the probe is correct and remains stable.

Care and cleaning

The probe tip is the most delicate part of the thermometer. It has to be clean and intact to ensure accurate readings.

If the thermometer is ever accidentally used without a lens filter, clean the probe tip as follows: Very gently wipe the surface with a cotton swab or soft cloth moistened with alcohol. After the alcohol has completely dried out, you can put a new lens filter on and measure. If the probe tip is damaged, contact Braun.

HI = too high

Temperature taken is not within typical human temperature range (34–42.2 °C or 93.2–108 °F).

Calibration

The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. If this thermometer is used according to the use instructions, periodic re-adjustment is not required. If at any time you question the accuracy of measurement, please contact Braun Infoline, phone (see page 2). Manufacturing date is given by the LOT number located in the battery compartment. The first number after LOT represents the last digit of the year of manufacture. The next three digits give the day of the year of manufacture. An example: LOT 0116 xx xx – this product has been manufactured on the 116th day of the year 2000.

If you cleaned the probe tip as instructed, and checked the disposable cover and correct placement of the tympanic thermometer in the ear canal. There is no field serviceable part for these units. It has to be returned to the manufacturer for repair. Check the LOT Number to see if its in warranty. Depending on your facility’s purchase agreement with Braun, there may be an exchange program for a fee. If the cost of exchange or cost is too expensive, it is best to purchase a new one. Also look at the age of the device to see if the Life Cycle Management criteria can justify the replacement.

I have the same problem with mine.

I simply use alcohol wiper to clean up the probe then it works great like what it was. Nothing secret.

I have exactly the same problem.

The issue is most likely defective sensor. Or could be calibration was lost. Unfortunately it seems this can’t be fixed at home…

Josef

I think the fairy tale of German technology is gone. Not buying Braun again. Shaver becomes dull after a few months. No this very expensive thermometer is a junk after a year of a few use.
