Confusion over striped pattern on screen

iMac A1174 20" 2.0ghz 2gb memory

Apple iMac "Core Duo" 2.0 20-Inch Specs

Identifiers: Early 2006 - MA200LL - iMac4,1 - A1174 - 2105

I have done a search through the ifixit links and repair post and the help section but am still a little unsure if this is a dsplay problem or an inverter problem.

The screen is a solid mass of stripes ranging from yellow to blue,(full spectrum) all about apixel wide.

Previous queries have been about a band of stripes, this is the complete orchestra.

What I need to know if it's the disply or something else like the inverter, I don't have a mini dvi hook up so can't check the screen on another onitor and don't have one anyway.

Appreciate the help.

Your site has kept my Powerbook alive for the past 14 yearrs or so. Keep up the great work.

Block Image

Thanks

I have a pic but can't see where to upload it.

You can use a simple video converter, plug it into the small video slot on your imac or MacBook & connect to an external monitor( you may need to toggle on/off ?f3 f4...) however the outcome will probably be your video card, for such an expensive machine _ can't they afford to use good quality solder ? You have to tear the whole thing apart & re-solder it all. with such small pins you pretty much need to either hold a high gun on the board back & forth for a few minutes (after removing any melt-able items from the area you want to "re-fuse" back together, sometimes hairline imperfections. Some say bake it in the oven for 6-8 minutes.

Other than looking sleek & modern, I'd prefer the tower version, fix or replace video card - back in business.

The upload for images is a tab in the lower left hand corner of the screen. This sounds like an LCD issue to me rather than an inverter problem. Without tthat monitor test we can't tell if it's the GPU. Without being able to test it that's not much you can do on your own. Here's a couple of things to try, but they probably won't help. Reseat your RAM one stick at a time. Reset the SMC and zap the PRAM. I'd take it in to the local repair place. Sorry.

Thanks for that just looking for some clarity before I start dismantling the unit.

I bought it,described as flashing power light as the problem, but this was obviously to hide the dead screen as it booted right up when I put in new ram.

I'lll try and upload the image again as a shot of the screen will always help others in the same situation

This was one of first iMac G5s -Core Duo rather than Core2Duo. Check the serial number and see if it falls with these ranges, if so, open it up and check the capaitors for swelling and/or corrosion: Serial Number ranges:

W8435xxxxxx – W8522xxxxxx

QP435xxxxxx – QP522xxxxxx

CK435xxxxxx – CK522xxxxxx

YD435xxxxxx – YD522xxxxxx

из

The serial is CK8240xxxxx

So doesn't fall betweeen any of the listed groups, but willcheck the capisitors and see if there's swelling.

Would this give the multi-stripes?

Thanks

This problem is most likely the GPU or the LCD. But since you have a working PowerBook, you can try to run Disk Utility via Target mode with a firewire cable and at least make sure the hard drive is OK. Can you give us a history on the iMacs problem? Did it happen all of a sudden?

из

I don't have a history at the moment as I just got the imac from eBay as a fixer. I was told that it was a ram issue maybe but that turned out to be a cover I think.....and my Powerbook isn't available at the moment it's vacationing in another country..........I do have an pc running XP Professional if I can hook that up via ethernet cable to appear on the pc's desktop.

I'll look into that and let you know how I do.

Thanks

The Mac in question is indeed not a G5 but the very first Intel iMac, check here. In my experience it's screen and GPU failing TOGETHER! Even if you replace the screen (the G5 screens won't work on this machine anyway) the problems will persist or kick in shortly after.

As much as i like to fix things - i'd discard the machine or use it as a server.

I've heard chatter about "reflowing" the board to re-seat the solder which is supposed to fix the problem. There have been numerous youtube episodes showinf "success's" Is this worth a try?

Or would I be prolonging the agony?

Thanks

из

Well, it's worth a try if you're shure that the GPU is at fault. Which is quite likely, see above.

I've just tried the extra screen via the mini dvi cable....(had to wait for one in the mail).....is there a secret key combo that I need or does it just mirror automatically on start up, as there's nothing getting through the dvi port to the external monitor.

Is this more associated symptoms of the GPU failure.

Thanks for all the patience and help on this guys.

Hi everybody,

for anyone not getting a free repair, don't throw away your imac yet! If you're willing to give ubuntu (a linux distribution) a try you can still make use of your computer with a little trick here and here are some notes about installing ubuntu on an imac:
