My control key is always "ON"

My 2012 laptop has a stuck Control key, although it isn’t really stuck. it functions normally but the computer thinks it’s always pressed. any way of fixing or deactivating it? I popped the key cover off and cleaned it with air and a small brush but that didn’t help. the little rubber thingy functions as it should. Never had any liquid or food dropped on it either.

Sometimes things break on their own, even on a 10/11 years old Mac. A keyboard replacement may solve your issue but at times even chips may go bad, a straight answer is just a guess in this case. I’m not 100% sure it may solve your problem, but have a look at Karabiner, it’s a KB remapping App and might help. It’s worth a try anyways..if that doesn’t help replacing keyboard or topcase would be the next least expensive option.

well we didn’t have much luck with Karbiner. we tried mapping the control key to the caps lock instead and if we hit the control key it turns the caps lock on (about half the time), but even if that works, it still gives us the control menu whenever we click on something. wonder if there is a way of turning off the internal keyboard so that we could use an external keyboard instead? btw, tried starting it in Safe Mode and although it turned off for a few seconds, it came back on as being pressed again. frustrating.

If Karabiner and safe mode don't change the picture and you're ready to use it with an external KB, you surely can disable your Mac KB in just a few minutes. Remove battery, remove the few bottom screws and you will find the Zif connector with the wide ribbon cable. You just lift up the little flap keeping the keyboard tightened to the connector and release the flat cable by pulling it horizontally away from the socket and you're done. ok thanks. for some reason Karabiner started working for my son (his laptop). so when it engages he can see the caps lock light come on and just tap it off. as long as he doesn't hit the control key he's usually ok. trying to delay this for another week or so till Apple makes their specila back to school offers on laptops. he might get a set of Beats headphones or something if he can wait a week or two. if it starts acting up again, i'll yank the ribbon like you suggested. thanks. after that i'll probably get a replacement keyboard pad. i replaced it a couple years ago when i got the laptop and some of the keys didn't work. only costs about $20 but it's a real pain in the butt to replace. maybe it will work again after that.
