I think my Ethernet port is broken

I know my ethernet port has been busted for a while. I’ve always had decent internet and only gamed a little but now that I’ve upgraded I’ve tried to use my ethernet. Whenever I plug it in nothing happens. I don’t receive any connection and neither of the green or orange lights pops up. All my other ports work perfectly fine except my ethernet. Is it possible it’s damaged?

Hi,

What is the make and model number of the motherboard (or PC)?

What OS is installed, Win 7, 8.1, 10?

Have you checked in Device Manager on the status of the ethernet Network Adapter, whether it is disabled, needs a driver update or if there is some other problem?

To get to Device Manager in Win 10, right click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and click on the Device Manager link in the options box that appears.

In Device Manager scroll down to find the Network Adapter entry and click on the arrowhead next to it to expand the list.

If there is a red cross next to the ethernet network adapter (I don’t know what its make and model number is in your computer as you provided no information), right click on the entry with the red cross and select enable and then test the ethernet connection.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the entry, right click on the entry with the yellow exclamation mark and select update driver and then follow the prompts. If you have no WiFi internet access you’ll have to get online somehow else to the ethernet adapter manufacturer’s website and find drivers for the particular adapter appropriate to the OS installed, which is used in the computer.

If there is no red cross or yellow exclamation mark next to the ethernet entry right click on the entry and select Properties and check the status of the device in the General Tab.

Here’s an image to show what I mean. It is not the same adapter as in your computer. It is only to show you where to look.

Hi,

Did you check the status of the Realtek 8111E/F PCIe Gigabit Ethernet LAN adapter in Device Manager as suggested above, you didn't say?

You also didn't mention what OS is installed.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the listed entry, here's a link to the various OS dependent drivers for the adapter.

Check that the drivers are up to date by comparing the version number of the installed driver in the motherboard (go to the "driver" tab shown in the second image above). If yours is older download and install the appropriate to OS new driver

Hi Daniel,

The Ethernet port may be turn off in the BIOS.

Go to "Onboard Devices Configuration",

"On Board LAN Controller" should be set to "Enabled".

You don’t say which motherboard you have. That helps the helpers.

Which model, are you using a built-in Ethernet or one from an add-in card?

It may just be that the driver is incorrectly installed - often the case on this forum.

Go to the Control Panel and click on “Device Manager” and then look for “Network adapters”, click on it.

You are looking for the one that does not say ”WAN Miniport”.

It may have an exclamation mark (!) on it.

Alternatively you may see something under “Other Device” with the exclamation mark.

Which ever unistall it and reboot your computer.

Go back and look in the “Device Manager”. What do you see?

How do you get to Onboard Devices Configuration? I do not see that as an option in Device Manager. Is there some way to access it?

@Josh Hanson

The settings referred to above are in BIOS and not in the OS Device Manager area

To access BIOS you usually have to press F2 or Del or some other key when the PC is first turned on and the maker's logo is on the screen and before it boots into the OS. Sometimes there is a message at the bottom of the screen saying to press a certain key to enter "Setup" but this depends on the make and model of the PC.

Check the user manual for your make and model PC to find out how to enter BIOS
