Temperature sensor placement for second SSD in Optical Drive tray

Hello,

I will be installing a second SSD drive in an optical drive tray, but before I do, I have a doubt: where should I install the temperature sensor, on the tray itself or on the SSD? In this video the guy says it is better to install it on the tray because the SSD can get warmer (it is on 16:34):

But i lose the monitoring in this case. Do you have any suggestions or advices?

Your system has three SATA ports! The first is servicing your HDD, the second the optical drive and a third which is unused (spare). Apple sold the system with a SSD as a premium config back in the day.

Now I don’t recommend using the optical drive port in this series as its only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) Vs the HDD and Spare SATA ports which are SATA III (6.0 Gb/s).

The better solution is to follow this guide Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428 Dual Drive Kit instead. As far as a thermal sensor the SSD really doesn’t need it. As SSD’s run a lot cooler than the mechanical HDD or Optical Drive.

But, if you use the Optical Drive bay you do need to leave it plugged in as the system needs the input. The thermal sensor was only needed for the optical drive. Just place it some where on the SSD directly.

I am aware that there is a better SATA III available port for connecting the SSD , but the procedure is simply too complicated for me to handle. I need to reach and remove the motherboard in order to plug the SSD on the spare port SATA III on its backside.

I ve read on the net that even though undoubtedly 6GPS SATA III is better than 3GPS SATA II, the difference will be hardly noticeable in practice. Do you agree on this?

Also, my optical drive is no longer working and producing weird noise, so I need to change it anyway. It is the ideal solution for me.

If you had an older SSD a few years ago then that might have been a workable solution using the optical drive as the drives were just not able to fully take advantage to the full SATA I/O. SSD's have gotten much better and cheaper since then! The best SSDs of 2019

So the question is which drive will be the boot drive your older SSD which you have in the HD bay or the one you are getting?

Depending on the age of the older SSD you might find putting it in the optical bay and make your new faster SSD as the boot drive putting it in the HD bay. If you where thinking of RAID'ing the drives then you must use the faster SATA III ports and the two SSD's should be matched in performance. Generally, I don't recommend setting up the boot drive in a RAID set.

FYI - You don't need to pull the logic board fully out just enough to get to the headers to plug in the cables. I think you'll find its not as bad as it looks in the guide.
