MacBook Air black screens after display assembly repair

So I just repaired my MBA with a display assembly that I bought off ebay. I followed the ifixit guides and everything went pretty smoothly.

I turned it on and it booted up fine with the display working perfectly. But after around 2 mins of usage the screen and the keyboard backlight went dark. I’ve then tried to power cycle it, reset SMC, PRAM etc and it won’t boot up again. I can hear the fan occasionally spinning though.

The weird part is I then stripped it down and put it together again to ensure all connectors are in properly. Once again it booted for 2 mins and then black all over again and won’t boot. It seems somehow taking it apart lets me boot it for mins again!

If anyone has any ideas here it would be very helpful, thanks!

After resetting the system again so you can boot up, this time hold the D Key to enter into diagnostics see what error code pops, let us know as well.

Hi Dan. I just tried that: so it says the battery needs service PPT004. After a minute or so on that screen it then went dead again like before.

PTT004 = Battery requires service

Hi Matt

The issue occured because you must of damaged one of the key componets which allows the screen to turn on ,

the ram might installed incorrecly so please try to re-insert and see if does work and if doesn’t its a hardware fault.

Hi John. Thanks for your comment. Isn't it a bit strange that the screen does work for around 2 mins though before it goes black? I think the RAM is soldiered onto the board, did you mean the SSD?

Now that we have a firm error message PTT004, you’ll need to replace the battery MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2011-Early 2015) Battery and here’s the guide you’ll need to follow MacBook Air 11" Early 2015 Battery Replacement

This is one of the easier battery to replace.

Do you think the battery could be responsible for the issue that I'm seeing considering I've had it plugged into mains power when the issue happens? I want to avoid wasting money buying a new battery in the case that I've damaged the machine irrecoverably.

Sometimes you have to fix the low hanging fruit first before you can solve the bigger problem. A bad battery can effect the system performance.

Your system will run without the battery. You can give that a try disconnect it and then plug in the MagSafe you system should spontaneously start and work.

Hi Dan. Thanks, I've just tried that now. Removed the battery and attached magsafe. Same issue I'm afraid it will boot if I unplug some internal cables and plug them back in and then after 2 mins black out like before and refuse to boot entirely without some internal tinkering again. It doesn't seem like the battery is the primary issue so unless I can fix whatever that is there's probably no point in me spending any money on the new battery.

That doesn't sound good at all. Have you tried plugging in your original display again to see if the replacement part was good or even the correct one?

из

Good idea I'll try that next.
