Which RAM is correct ones for my Mac?

I’m looking at upgrading my machine with some RAM, and hopefully the i7 7700k CPU as well.

Question for RAM - I looked at buying Crucial 32 GB kit (very reasonable price), but I noticed that the iFixit RAM maxxer kit has PC4-17000 RAM included (quite pricey as well), while the ram that’s Crucial website suggests for the 2017 models is PC4-19200.

Which one is the correct one for my system? I would hate going through the torture of opening this thing up and ending up with wrong RAM - lol

The system requires 260-pin PC4-19200 (2400 MHz) DDR4 SO-DIMM modules. Max of two 16 GB SO-DIMMs for a total of 32 GB as it only has 2 SO-DIMM memory slots.

As far s your CPU upgrade you’re limited to what Apple installed so you need the i7-7700 CPU

Thanks for a thorough reply. That's what I thought. I was just confused when i saw 17000 in the iMac 2017 ram maxer kit on ifixit. Wanted to make sure I'm getting correct memory.

The i7 - so the highest cpu that I can upgrade to is the i7 7700, and not the 7700k?

Yep 7700 not the 7700k

There are two issues that limit you the first is the TDP this logic board is limited to 65 Watts the second systems bus clocking.

Intel ARK - Core i7-7700 Processor

Intel ARK - Core i7-7700K Processor

So the bottom line its not possible to use it.

@danj Thanks! 7700 should be just fine for me as well, I'm happy I have options at all using a Mac system lol.

Under Apple's configurations, the 3.0 GHz 4K tops out at 16 GB of ram . If you want 32 GB, you have to buy the more expensive 3.4 GHz version

I think I saw people mentioning that they can run 32gb on the 3.0ghz versions. Besides, I'm planning to upgrade the cpu to i7, should allow me to use up to 64gb if I read things correctly.

@judysmith712 - The 4K logic boards are technically the same! Only the processors are different.

The non-4K system uses the older logic board which don't have all the address lines active from what I was told.

The older CPU's can only address 32 GB while this series could address 64 GB there is not enough address lines in the two slots to support anything higher than 16 GB modules.

@danj Thank you for the clarification dan
