Why can't I install High Sierra OS Solved
Problem started when my computer began to slow—90% of CPU was being taken up by system processes. I reset the SMC, but that did nothing. I rebooted the system in safe mode, suspecting a third party kernal extension, but the slowness and high fan persisted in safe mode. I don’t have the skills to mess with Apple’s kernal extensions, so I decided to do a new OS installation.
I backed up my files, then attempted a High Sierra install from a bootable USB. The process went fine at first, but hung up on the apple logo screen with the progress bar at what looked like 99-100%. Tried multiple times, always hung up at the same spot on this progress bar. I erased the hard drive and tried to install again. Same issue. I tried to do an internet reboot to Mountain Lion, but no disk appeared to select to boot to.
I’m strongly suspecting hardware, but am not sure if it would be the logic board, or something else. I don’t know how to test this. Any info on how I can figure out the issue is greatly appreciated!

Do a SMC reset? This resolved it for me.
