Airport card will not connect

So I bought a Pismo airport card from a guy on eBay named tonyzz. It works in the sense that it can pick up and detect different wifi networks. However it cannot connect to a password protected network because "the pass word was incorrect" evenafter typing it several times. But if it commects to an open network, it works

Yes getting Tiger worked. Apparently anything less than osx 10.3 will be unable to connect to a WPA network

Are you selecting the proper security/encryption type when you select your network. When prompted for the password, make sure you select wether it's WEP, WPA, or WPA2. If you have a WPA or WPA2 network encryption your airport card might not support this.

That's what it supposed to do. If you are trying to access a password protected network, use the correct password. Get that from the administrator. Your card seems to be working just fine.

I use tonyzz all the time for older mac parts. Best selection for Pismos and always stands behind his products.+ for good answer later.

I have been typing the correct password for my network (netgear). I've also tried my friend's 2Wire network. No matter how many times I've typed it 'the password for the selected network is incorrect'

Check to see if you have the latest updates to the Airport utilities--it can make a difference.

I've downloaded all the updates via Ethernet cord but still, the airport will not connect the wifi. "The password for the selected network is incorrect.'" Believe this is not user typing error since over the past 20 tries I guarantee I typed it right at least once.

It has:

Airport Setup Assistant (last modified Sept. 2003, created Sept. 2001)

Airport Admin Utility (last modified Sept. 2003, created Sept. 2001)

Do you think it is only a problem since OSX 10.2.8 is old?

Since the card works with other networks but not with the one with a password I believe you have a software conflict of some kind. That computer will with max memory (1 GB) run Tiger 10.4.11 nicely. If possible update to the newer system and see if that clears your problem.

It appears my AirPort Card security/encryption will have to be changed from WPA Personal to WEP type security/encryption from an AirPort Extreme base station? I will be looking for an APE base station locally to see if the change can be made.

The original Airport Card will only work with WEP security, even if you can select the WPA or WPA2 in the list on, lets say, tiger, the OS can handle the encryption, but the card can't, the ROM in the card is just to old, i own a iBook G3 indigo with Tiger on it, and it just refuses the WPA2 and WPA secirity, so why you would find these in the security menu of the airport prompt? Well, it turns out that there are some usb wifi dongles around, i beleive the gray D-Link ones, that also work with the airport/wifi dropdown menu next to the clock, but before you do that, you should remove the internal airport card, just to make shure that it isnt going to use the obsolete airport card, and with the usb wifi dongle connected, you can choose a wifi network, and amazingly, it accepts the WPA and WPA2 protocol, and why is that? Because the D-Link wifi dongle, uses appearantly some similar chipset comming from Lucent (wich was the manufacturer of the Airport card) but whit a different bios/rom that accepts these newer security protocols but the mac os detects this as an airport card, there are some internal solutions to with a pcmcia wifi card from Belkin or Lucent that, after some modifications, can be installed inside these older apple laptops, so that there is nothing sticking out of your laptop and uses the great internal antenna system but also supports all the newer security protocols! My advice? Check out google, youtube, and after the research, go on ebay and your oldie will rock the internet again just like in the old days! Good luck people!!
