Kernel_task is using all my CPU. Restart didn't work.

So my friends Mac began to become incredibly slow. He restarted it and it was still slow. The fan was running like a jet engine, so I checked the activity monitor. Turns out, the Kernel_task was using all of my CPU. I googled what it was, but I don’t know why it turned on as the computer is now cooler that the surrounding air. Any fixes?

Update (12/09/2019)

So I looked at the activity monitor, and the Kernel_Task is still rampant. I saw however, that a “kextd” was running. I remember that when I researched the problem, kextds could be the root of it. Any fixes for this?

Did something happen to the system?

Dropped, spilled drink into keyboard or trackpad, or sat onto a wet surface.

The system is in Safe Mode as one of the thermal or voltage sensors is telling SMC there is a problem. You need to figure out what happened. Run the onboard diagnostics restarting the system and pressing the D key. Apple messed up the firmware in some releases of macOS so if it fails to run we'll need to try other methods.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Actually, no. It was just running normally. Nothing happened.

@jeveisback - Did you run diagnostics?

My friend hasn't had time to, will ask him tomorrow

On the positive side it seems to be gradually (extremely gradually) cooling off, so it might be fine by this morning. If it isn't, then I guess we'll have to.

First and easiest thing is to disconnect the battery, since a battery failure may cause CPU throttling and unresponsive finder actions. If that fixes the issue you just need a battery replacement. If it doesn’t, try running a diagnostic in the hope it may give some basic additional info to work on: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

Well, the thing I got my battery replaced about 2 months ago. It was a brand new battery.

@jeveisback It wouldn't be the first faulty new battery, there's a bit of everything in the market. Download Coconut Battery for evaluation, or open up System Profiler and select Power, that's where main battery data will be available. You can add a screenshot to your original question if you need help reading or evaluating data.

Its kinda past fixing now, not only is the computer unusable, but the charger in a wonderful act of serendipity decided to stop working.

из

@jeveisback Try disconnecting the battery from the board, just to make sure, and plug back the Magsafe right after, hope it's just the battery.

из

Yeah, it might be the charger too though. I'll try it.
