Power adapter light not lighting up

I got a broken Magsafe charger from a relative. She specifed it sometimes charges and sometimes it doesnt. I found that the issue was a loose plug on the 230v side of the power adapter.

I cracked the charger open and resoldered the pin. Closed it backed and taped it so noone gets killed.

Now this is the strange part, i have my other charger and it works no problem, LEDs and all.

The other repaired adapter charges the computer (you can see it on the notebooks display) but, the status led stays off.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this? Its just cosmetic but id still like it fixed for her.

If it charges fine then the issue may be with the led board that you have in the magnetic charger plug. Replacing the charger cable would probably solve the issue, since the Mac part of the charging circuit works fine with another charger, if I got right. I’d just install Coconut battery App to check the correct power is supplied to the Mac, but if that is right comparing the two chargers data then it would only be more of a cosmetic matter. Even if unrequested, I’d stress once more the risks of dealing with the inners of a Magsafe..charged capacitors can indeed stop one’s heart beat, they are very very dangerous beasts.

I just checked it once more. The led turned randomly on a few times, although noticeably dimmer than the other charger. And, i also found out it doesnt actually charge unless the led is on. Im getting confused, seems like its caused by the charge controller inside the power adapter. Is there a way to fix that?

Also, im aware of the risks involved in working with the charger. I "professionaly" shorted all the caps before touching anything :-P

@Deadly Pants You can find on youtube some videos showing how to open up the magsafe plug, although before opening I would try and check if pins spring properly back into position when pushed down. There might be some dirt or some oxide inside preventing proper contact. A drop of deoxidizer such as the ones used by electricians may come in helpful. Other than that I can only think of replacing the full cable. Glad you already knew about safety before venturing into repair, but no harm in warning :)

@arbaman All the pins are springing just fine, visually i dont see any damage or debris. I think its caused by something inside the brick itself. Another thing I noticed is that the orange light often shows up when I open the lid. Looks like a problem in the communication between the adapter and the computer which is sadly outside of my abilities.

At least she doesnt really need it. It used to be her secondary charger and was on the way to be thrown out.

@Deadly Pants Hard to tell, but being pogo pins in working order then it's either the ID board talking to system onewire or the brick itself with some additional issues. Maybe not worth to dedicate further time and money into the repair. When the Magsafe connector is plugged into the Mac, the Mac applies a resistive load, pulling the power input low to about 1.7 volts.

The charger detects the power input has been pulled low, but not too low. (A short or a significant load will not enable the charger.) After exactly one second, the charger switches to full voltage. There's a 16-bit microprocessor inside the charger to control this and other charger functions.

The Mac detects the full voltage on the power input and reads the charger ID using the 1-Wire protocol.

If the Mac is happy with the charger ID, it switches the power input to the internal power conversion circuit and starts using the input power. The Mac switches on the appropriate LED on the connector using the 1-Wire protocol.

This is from the post you sent. Seems like the problem is at the microprocesor controlling the voltage or the charger ID. Unless the signal wire is loose somewhere, there is no way im fixing that. Im just a guy with an ifixit basics set and a soldering iron. :-D
