Water Damage to MacBook Pro!

I have a Macbook Pro bought in 2010. Was running great until, while working on a large home renovation, spilled water on the bottom of the laptop.

The laptop was sitting on the counter in the kitchen, opposite side of the sink. Water ran from the sink and sat under my Macbook. I don’t know how long it was wet, but it was probably an hour or so. It was plugged in also, which is how I first noticed it because the green light from the charger was off.

When I press the button that shows the batter level, the green lights light up, but it wont charge, and it wont turn on. Its been a few weeks now and I just haven’t had time to get it looked at, but its doing the same thing.

I need guidance on how to get this fixed, what parts may be damaged. If I can get a little info on what might be the issue I believe I can get it fixed. Thanks for your time in advance!

Which do you have? A 13" or a 15" model.

You’ll need to pop off the bottom cover to inspect things and to prevent more damage disconnect the battery ASAP!!

The first thing to do in a situation like this is to not try and power on the device. It’s tempting to see if it’s still working but this can cause more issues than you may have. You also want to get the device opened as soon as possible so you can get any liquid cleaned up. Letting components sit in liquid will cause corrosion and that will lead to devices not functioning. The longer you wait, the more likely corrosion will form and cause irreversible damage.

When the water entered, it more than likely began corroding components on the logic board imediately. If you say it was about an hour, chances are it turned off shortly after water entered the bottom due to the water causing shorts on the logic board. You would most likely have to send it to a board repair person such as myself, or another option is look for a used logic board and replace it using the guide on iFixit. Since it is a 2010 your most econonical option may to buy the board and replace it. What you would need to do is open the bottom, find the logic board number (it starts with an “820” prefix and then jump onto google. Good luck and happy hunting!
