When I turn on my laptop it won't turn on but the light is there

What is the model number of the laptop?

It seems as though it is trying to boot from the CD drive that hasn't got a boot disc inserted (is there a disc in there?) and then doesn't boot off the HDD.

Check in BIOS if your HDD is being detected and also what the boot order is for the laptop.

What light is still there?

Try the following.

Turn off the laptop if it is on and switch off and disconnect the charger from the laptop if it is connected to the laptop.

Once the laptop has completely shutdown, remove the battery from the laptop. (see image below)

Press and hold the laptop’s Power button for 30 seconds and then release the button.

Reconnect the charger to the laptop, switch on the charger and then try to turn on the laptop and check if it starts OK (the battery is still left out at this stage).

If the laptop starts OK allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, allow the HDD activity to settle down i.e. wait about 5 minutes and then shutdown the laptop in the normal manner.

Once the laptop has completely shutdown, switch off and disconnect the charger from the laptop.

Reinsert the battery into the laptop, reconnect and switch on the charger and then try to turn on the laptop.

If it starts OK allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, allow the HDD activity to settle down i.e. wait about 5 minutes and then check the charge status of the battery.

If the battery is charging allow it to fully charge before switching off the charger and disconnecting it from the laptop.
