Faulty LCD panel or chassis/seal?

Hi all, looking for some feedback on the light-bleed issue with my 2011 iMac, as you can see in the photos it’s pretty evident.

I’ve been quoted $400 (Australian pesos) to replace the LCD panel by a local repair place. This about the same cost to replace the whole machine and, to be honest, I’m not 100% sure a new LCD panel is necessary.

At the very least I’d like to be confident in what needs to be done before either getting it fixed or selling for parts.

So what do you folks think? Is the LCD panel cooked or did a previous owner/repairer mess up an install?

Thanks in advance

The stage lighting effect you see at the bottom of the screen is the backlight LED’s are not all on. The strip of LED’s is setup so every other is lit by a different power feed.

The backlight LED’s within the panel is not likely failing. I have seen the connector at the end of the strip has become disconnected from the wires, while not easy its repairable! The other area I’ve seen is the power cable from the LED driver board has been damaged.

So I would start off by checking the voltage at the LED driver to make sure the LED driver is OK iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 LED Driver Board Replacement Review Step 6 making sure the cable is not damaged and then test the voltages of the power leads.

Thanks Dan! I had a feeling this would be a known issue, I hadn't come across "stage lighting" as a description tho. Now I can see this is a pretty common problem with MacBooks as well.

I'll do a ring around of repairers and see if I can get one of them to take a look.
