Ice maker quit, fridge temp low, and ice build up

Model: WRF757SDEM00

4 months of use (got it from re-store still wrapped and crated, but obviously no warranty)

Ice maker quit working on own. Can eject ice with test 57, run water with test 45, and repeat to make more ice. Test 56 gives E2

Several days later noticed temp of fridge rising. Condensation forming around lip of ice bucket. Then looked at bottoms of fridge and found major build up on what I believe is the evaporator.

I am not wise enough to know if it is one problem or two different problems.

Appreciate any advice.

Hi,

Your refrigerator has two evaporator units, one in each compartment, fridge and freezer

What compartment is the temp rising, fridge or freezer?

Which compartment is the ice forming in?

If both problems are in the fridge section there may be a problem with the auto defrost. Auto defrost should occur once every 6-12 hours (depends on manufacturer) so there should never be a major build up of ice over the evap unit.

Check if the evap fan has also been iced over and is stopped.

Ice build up over the evap unit can be caused by the following (no set order)

faulty defrost heater

faulty defrost thermostat (or thermistor)

blocked drain pipe from below the evap unit to the evap pan under the compartments near the compressor

faulty control board

Here’s a link to the parts for the refrigerator (scroll down below “All parts” to find the parts diagrams which help to locate the parts)

It is in the fridge. The evaporator is iced up all the way down to the pan and inside the vent.

@lotney ,

You will have to turn off the refrigerator and defrost the ice so that you can start checking for the problem.

Do not apply too much heat to the evap unit as this can damage it. You may have to just carefully nudge the melting action a bit to speed it up.

Check if the evap fan is also iced over or not.

Once the ice has gone, check the drain pipe is clear by pouring a measured amount of water down and check if it all arrives at the evap pan. If the drainpipe is also frozen this might have to wait until it defrosts.

Use an Ohmmeter to check the defrost heater for continuity.

If you have the service manual you may be able to test the defrost cycle operation but not sure of this

@jayeff any idea if this would cause ice maker to not work?

из

@lotney ,

The E2 code seem to indicate a problem with the ice maker itself.

Once you have cleared the ice build up problem check the ice maker again.

Just wondering if the water supply line to the ice maker was also frozen preventing normal operation of machine somehow.

@jayeff water still dispensed when I did test 45 and I could harvest it with test 57. Defrosting now, will see where I am at in the morning.

Where is the evaporizer unit located

most freezers run at 5°F or less. Refrigerator temp really shouldn't affect it at all. Whether your evap coil is in the fridge (dual evap setup)or just the freezer its the freezer temp that matters.
