PS3 no signal / boot after thermal compound replacement, GLOD

My console worked fine except it was very noisy.

I decided to change thermal compound and changed it with Arctic MX-4.

However, after I had my console assembled back I can’t manage to boot it up. It boots, but no video.

Green light is on, fan is working, USB ports have power on them, HDD indicator blinks at the start but then stays off.

Controller does not get recognized by console via wireless or cable, it just charges and flashes slowly.

The only way to turn PS3 off is by taking the power cable out. Sometimes it can be turned off by long pressing the power button (like 15 seconds).

I’ve tried:

1) Resetting video settings. No luck.

2) Entering recovery mode. It beeps twice but still behaves the same, so no luck.

3) Booting without hard drive (SSD in my case). Nothing changed.

4) Tried different HDMI cable, AV cable, 2 different TV’s. Zero changes.

5) Disassembled the console twice to inspect the board and if I forgot to plug something in. Everything seems to be fine and in place, but nothing changed.

I have reached the dead end and I have no idea how could simple thermal compound replacement end up in this disaster, what is the problem and what to do now.

Is there anything can be done about this or my PS3 is completely screwed?

Attaching some photos of my motherboard from both side. I’ve cut the HDD part of it but I can add it too if needed.

@dantoma …. when replacing thermal compound and opening the device to do so, if it causes any issues, then that is the problem. either there is too much thermal compound, not enough or the thermal pads on surrounding chips are no longer compressing and is causing air pockets between the chip and the pad. to solve this, ensure that you are applying the appropriate amount of compound and replacing the used thermal pads on the surrounding chips.

I’m pretty sure pads are alright and that I’m applying the right amount of thermal compound. I did it twice on that console and previous attempts were pretty successful. I’ll disassemble the console again to triple-check though.

the pads only compress and decompress so much...and you state youve done it a few times already. if it was working fine before you took it apart and now it doesnt work....kinda points to the process and its involved components. sounds like you know what youre doing with thermal paste so that just leaves the thermal pads.

Disassembled the console again.

I’ve found total 3 pads, 1 one the mainboard itself and 2 on the heatsink.

All of them seem to be fine.

I’ve done some research on the internet and most people say that this problem is video chip related, how true is this? Can this be the real issue? I can also send some pictures of my mainboard if it would help.

ofcourse it can be true, but its very coincidental that it just happened to quit working after replacing thermal compound for the third time. but lets not rule it out completely. no signal could be the hdmi controller, the controller ic, or the apu. i was just trying to start at the most likely scenario as you just got done servicing. to troubleshoot the circuits to find which of the others it could be, youll want to have a multimeter and the ability to use it. post some pictures of your board including the model number on the board. schematics are non exsistant, but we can troubleshoot the easier stuff to rule them out before stating its the apu.

Thank you for replying so far!

I’ve added some photos to my post.

Hopefully I took them right.

This is DYN-001 model with 1-880-055-31 model number.

I doubt that I’ve messed the apu by replacing thermal compound either, but anything can happen..

I have friend with multimeter and some knowledge of using one, I can borrow it and try to do that.
