graphics card for MacBook Pro late 2011

Since Apple very conveniently stopped making parts for my MacBook Pro (late 2011), does anyone know where else I could try to purchase another graphics card?

The dual graphics GPU on the MacBook Pro 2011 15” can be permanently disabled or treated with a software fix.

Here’s a video on doing it permanently

Here’s the software fix which I have used on about a dozen machines now to get them back to functionality:

gfx card status

I wish I had known this info before making another Apple purchase. If I could only get my MacBook Pro working again. Unfortunately, I would not attempt to make such repairs on my own. Is this something that you might consider doing for me?

First do the gfx card fix, it works very well.

If anybody does this repair, or know someone that does, please contact me !!!

In addition to my previous post, I have a 17” 2011 MacBook Pro. I desperately need to have it fixed !!!

The MacBook Pro’s don’t have serviceable graphics card. You’ll need a new logic board if the graphics died. How about telling us a bit more on what you have encountered so we can be sure the logic board is the issue.

I was using a flight simulator at time of failure. The fans were working at max, but could not cool it fast enough I guess. The screen went blue, then black. After that it tried several times to reboot, but to no avail. What's the point of having a computer if it can't keep up with what I want to do with it. I can't be just web surfing and sending emails. Even when I try viewing from a group of IP cameras, the fans go nuts.

A second option is to replace your logic board with a better version. The 2012 logic boards are compatible with your system. I'm presently banging away on such a system was a late 2011 which now has a i7 2.7 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M board.

Do all MacBooks have this overheating problem or is it just this model? I mean, what point would it be to replace to a 2012 logic board only to have this issue all over again? Just sayin'

@danj I buy a lot of the 2012 machines. They are repairable and upgradable. An upgraded 2012 runs at the exact same speed as a MacBook Air 2020 and at half the price. The problem with replacing the logic board is that you can get the whole machine for less than the cost of the logic board so replacing a logic board on a 2011 is not a good option. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcj1FpEl...

@mayer - I think you need to reword what you wrote as your first statement, doesn't jive with what you say at the end.

As far as the pro's and con's of refitting a 2012 logic board into a 2011 system Vs buying a MacBook Air 2020. Each have their merits. The new air has a very nice screen, but it doesn't have the GPU power and is thermally limited. Whereas the 2012 has a better GPU and not as badly CPU throttled. The newer retina 2016 (butterfly) or older 2015 (scissor) I think that's getting closer in the comparison.

As far as costs most of the 2012 13/15" Unibody logic boards are in the $450~650 where the buying the newest 2020 13" MacBook Air is $1000 ~1300 range at the base and adding RAM & storage gets expensive! And the 2016 ~ 2019 MacBook Pro retinas they are still more expensive and they also force you into USB-C. You also need to do it at time of purchase as you can't alter it later (unlike the 13/15" Unibody MacBook Pro's.

I would rather personally keep my 15" MacBook Pro Unibody then give up the screen size. But my needs and usage is not the same as others. I'm likely going to get a 16" model next year.
