Which are the most upgradable MacBook Pro's and MacBook Air's?

Can anybody make a list of the most upgradable MacBook Pro’s and Airs that don’t have any significant problems and are worth the investment today?

Thanks

Very simple list!

Both of these have serviceable RAM & storage: Upto 16 GB of RAM and the largest 2.5” SATA SSD thats made, so far thats a custom Samsung 7.68 TB, yes that big!

This next group have soldered RAM so you need to get the largest amount of RAM they offer at time of purchase as you can’t upgrade the RAM later. You could swap out the logic board with one that has more RAM, but thats expensive!

The blade SSD is upgradable, but it uses a custom Apple interface, which while some people try to use adapters with the more standard M.2 SSD’s this is a mixed bag as the quality of these adapters and the SSD its self makes this very iffy!

I strongly recommend sticking with the custom Apple SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs or using either the OWC or Transcend SSD’s which are designed to be direct replacement to the Apple custom SSD’s

The 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar also seem to be SSD upgradable.

@kim_sv - The OP stated "The most upgradable" While the 2016/17 13" MacBook Pro 'Fn Key system's SSD is removable the RAM is not.

Besides, the drive you use becomes an issue if its not the Apple OEM or OWC drive.

FYI: The older SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) port systems can now support drives as big as 100 TB! ExaDrive DC series Specifications Not cheap but when you are doing video/music work these drives are a kick! I've put in two so far!

Well, you also stated 5 different MacBook Air/Pro models that where - ONLY - SSD upgradable, so I just filled in that MBP 2016 and MBP 2017 (without Touch Bar) are equally SSD only upgradable.

Regarding the SSD problems you talk about using regular NVMe drives with an adapter, I disagree. Sure there're some bad adapters out there, but it is 100% doable if you do your homework and buy the right one. Also there've been some FW issues on some models depending on BTO configuration, but like I said, do your homework and it is doable.

Bluntly stating that "the drive you use becomes an issue if not the Apple OEM or OWC drive" is just plain false.

In addition to @danj great answer. An upgraded 2012 MBP runs at exactly the same speed as a 2020 MBA at less than half the price. You can also afford to repair it.

The Sintech adapters seem to be the most compatible. I'm running a Crucial P3 in one inside a 2015 rMBP. Took the storage from 250GB to 2TB.
