After Catalina 10.15.5 Updates, MBP 2017 13" shuts off at around 20%

The new Battery Management System on MacOS 10.15.5 Update may have caused it. Because before the update, I can use it under 10% and there’s a battery low warning, and it sleeps when reached 5%. But now, it suddenly shuts off when the battery have 20% left. The next day, it’s around 40-50% battery and the macbook just shuts off. I’ve tried resetting the SMC, and now im trying to recalibrate it by charging to 100% and use it till it’s used. But still, 40% shuts off automatically.

Does anyone have the same issue after the update, or is it just me? If it’s just me, then it’s the battery.,

Thank you.

I have the same issue, the same Macbook, you're not alone. It also started with the update, tried everything, no avail.

Yeah. After a month, I managed to use it near 5% but only if I was only browsing a web or doing other light tasks, like reading. When Im watching Youtube, streaming Netflix, or any other high demand tasks, I can't get lower than 15%, and often shuts off randomly at 16% - 30%.

Now I'm convinced that this is a combination of bad Catalina Update and my aging battery. Though, to be honest I didn't expect that the battery could be this bad in 1-2 years time (Bought it in 2018).. Now I only have like 3-4 hours battery, and 1-2 hours of battery when streaming.

Hello,

You can check the battery condition in the entry saver system preferences and disable battery health management there to rule out any issue with that feature.

Michael

Hi Michael thanks for the response

I've already tried to disable Battery Health Management from the setting, since 3 days ago, basically before I posted here. I have still turned it off, till now. Unfortunately, to no avail, I still can't get pass 40% no matter how many times I try to drain the battery to lower state (with normal usage, and not draining purposely using high demanding tasks).

I have also run Apple diagnostic test, and the results came out 'No Issues found'. I've also check the battery condition, and it says 'Normal'. Im really suspecting the 10.15.5 update really messed up the SMC or something, but I could be wrong either way since I don't really know how it works. Right now I can only use it till 40% battery left.. Maybe, I'll try to downgrade it to 10.15.4 (?) I don't even know if it is possible..,

Thanks, hope I can resolve the issue

@danivideda Yes, you can downgrade (backup first). You need to boot in internet recovery. The version you will be reinstalling will vary depending on they combination you use when booting. See https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT204904 for more information.
