iMac won't boot past Apple logo in any way

One day my 2019 iMac was just on standby when it just shut down, and it was never able to boot back into anything. The Logo shows up and the progress bar goes to 60% and restarts, then it gives me the message that “My computer restarted because of a problem” and restarts, then just giving me a loading bar which goes to 60%. It then reboots again through this cycle until about 5 minutes later when it gives a prohibitory symbol and shuts off. I have tried everything, including

Recovery Mode, where the bar becomes slower but still reboots anyway

Internet recovery, where it the progress bar under the globe finishes but then fails to boot after

Booting off an install usb, where I still cannot get in

Safe mode, where the issue still persists

Smc reset and Pram reset which both did nothing

Single user mode where the cpu and macos version is being detected correctly,

Reseated all the ram and checked one by one (nothing changed)

Mac hardware test where it passed (?????)

And after all of that I still cannot boot into anything. Curiously it still manages to still powered on during single user mode and the disk selection screen, leading me to believe this is not a cpu issue.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Also, I could only find my exact problem on this post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/822...

What is your drive config a HDD (platter) or SSD (blade) or Fusion Drive setup?

You might want to see if you can boot up under the Startup Manager pressing the Option (⌥) key. Then use the keyboard error keys tl select your boot volume. Let us know if that worked.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

It is a fusion drive with the blade ssd and a sata ssd. I have tried this and it does not work, it just wont boot into anything, install usb, external os, recovery...

What was your date of purchase?

Apples onboard diagnostic is not a full diagnostics, in addition diagnostics are limited with horizon issues, that’s when its not designed to perform deeper diagnostics past an interface.

Your issue is clearly a software level issue which is being aggravated by the Fusion Drive config. Depending on where you live and your systems warranty status I would bring the system in to either an Apple Store or authorized service center. I fear the blade SSD has failed so its not properly caching the HDD. If its not covered under warranty or AppleCare+ support contract then you’ll need to either fix your own system or get someone local to help you.

The approach I would do here is restart the system in Target Disk Mode which will allow you to access your system from a second Mac via Thunderbolt cable connecting the two. Here’s a more detailed guide How to Boot a Mac in Target Disk Mode

Using the other system you can backup any files on your HDD which is the first thing I would do. Then I would reformat the SSD (smaller drive) then restart your system did that fix things? Sometimes thats all thats needed. If not go back and this time reformat your HDD and now from your remote system install a fresh copy of macOS. I strongly recommend you stick with Mojave as even today Catalina is still very buggy!

You may need to re-down load your OS installer as Apple messed up the certificates! If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

Here’s a direct link to the needed OS file which has been fixed: App Store - macOS Mojave

Would a failed blade ssd even prevent it from booting into internet recovery? And there’s no need for getting the data off as I use time machine. Would a failed blade ssd prevent it from booting from external usb as well? Is there some boot files on the blade ssd preventing the boot sequence from completing at all?

And btw the installer usb was created yesterday

If setup as a Fusion Drive it can mess things up in some very odd ways. The SSD in this config is a cache drive so it can be corrupted with a bad set of blocks (even caused by the HDD's failure!)

So we need to zero out the SSD so it can rebuild its self and if that fails zero out the HDD and re-install the OS,

So I have to tear apart the computer to get to the blade and the sata right?

Also, the person who has the same problem doesnt seem to have a fusion drive: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/822...

No! Thats not what I said! Let's leverage Target Disk Mode to recover things. No disassembly required!

Then if that fails we will need to look deeper.

Just like a doctor doesn't just slice you open before trying non-invasive solutions!

But doc why did you give me a Y incision for a sore throat!

As for your link I don't think they know if they have an HDD only setup. As far as your USB installer did you just down load the file from the App Store? If not you should. Read the link I posted on certificates.

Yea, from the app store. Funnily enough, the imac doesn't seem to crash and reboot when in target disk mode, unlike anything else I've tried. Does this indicate anything? And also, I've tested the install usb on another mac and it works.

If you can take out the ssd and buy a sata to usb adapter and clear it on another iMac if you have one or have a friend or relative with one. Then boot into recovery mode and put a new os on your ssd and try again the OS may be corrupted. P.S you should probably back up your stuff on your ssd. Sorry I keep refereeing to it as an ssd if its a fusion drive or hdd.

The blade SSD is not easily accessible as its on the backside of the logic board! And besides the connection is custom so you would need a special case to hold the drive. OWC Envoy Pro
