Why won't MacBook turn on after changing SATA cable?

I followed the step-by-step guide on iFixit and also looked up a couple of YouTube videos. The charger stays green but the computer won’t turn on when pressing the power button. Pressing the power button and shift + control + option keys also isn’t helping me. What else could I do to get my machine to turn on?

This isn’t my first time attempting to fix my Macbook. A few months back I changed the HDD to an SSD and didn’t come across any problems. Thanks in advance!

What happens when you enter into the onboard diagnostics? Restart your system and press the D key? Tell us what error messages you get.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Hi Dan, I've tried pressing the power button + D and the power button + option + D, as well as a few other key combinations in the suggested doc, and it's simply not turning on.

The battery is full charged, and I plugged it in before placing the MacBook's lower case back on.

Is it possible I installed the SATA cable incorrectly? Are there any things you'd recommend double-checking?

Thanks so much for the help so far :)

OK, so you have a dead system! Which is a very different issue that changing out the SATA cable won’t have any effect. Disconnect the HDD SATA cable from the logic board connection to verify you haven’t damaged something.

I’m suspecting you have a logic board failure.

What should I look out for or check after disconnecting the cable?

The only reason I attempted to change it was because after upgrading to an SSD, my computer's performance only improved slightly and a lot of forums said changing the cable to a newer one ended up being the right solution for them.

из

From a working perspective, that is often true! The cable tends to degrade from rubbing along the aluminum uppercase and if you have an earlier version its cable also was not very good when running on SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) SSD's. Here's a bit more Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb

But we need to get back to that point! I think you'll need to retrace your steps to see if you messed up something. Otherwise its time for a new logic board ;-{

Hi Dan, I removed the new cable and re-installed my original one (that came with the MacBook) and the computer powers on again! I followed the same steps as I did when attempting to install the new cable.

Do you have any recommendations on what to do next? I'm not sure if attempting to re-install the new cable is the right move, or, if I might need to order another new one.

Thanks again for all of your help!

They you have a bad cable! Time to get a replacement cable!

Hi @danj, I know it's been a while but I was hoping you could still help me/share some advice! If my computer is recognizing the SSD with the original Apple SATA cable that came with my computer, is the SATA cable the problem here or should I do something else to improve speed and performance?

The computer operates fine but will start slowing down after some time if I want to do multiple things at once – like watch a movie Netflix on AND web browsing. Thanks again!

What is the drive? Make & model

Did you replace the SATA cable or are you using the original one?

It's a Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB. I'm using the original one right now.

I tried installing a replacement cable but the latch snapped off (I didn't experience this the first time around), so I was unable to keep the ribbon in place while installing the new cable.

So we still need to get that cable replaced, right?

@danj I'm starting to think that wasn't an issue in the first place since my current cable has been reading the SSD... is there anything else you would recommend to improve the speed and performance of my MacBook?

Since Chrome is known to hog up a lot of memory, I'm wondering if I should upgrade my RAM from the 8 GB I already have.

No, you have a cable issue!

Think of it like this .... You are driving along in your car only to find the road in front is all torn up! You slow down right? Taking it slow you don't get bounced about and your car is not damaged. Now think what happens when you drive across at a high speed! You'll get tussled up! And you might end up messing your car up quite badly!

This is exactly the same thing here! The old HDD was like driving slow over the rough road, now your ultra fast SSD just racing through the rough road. Here we loose data and have to go back to get another copy doing this not once but thousands of times! As each block that fails created a CRC error needing to be fixed. The given file/s could be only a few hundred blocks. Thats why your system is slow!

I have a very same issue: The old HDD cable failed on my MacBook early 2011, so I purchased a new one. Connected it and MacBook would not turn on. Removed it - it works fine and turns on. Add it again - no life at all. So I opened another Macbook early 2011 which is fully working, disconnected the original HDD cable and connected this one (exactly the same models) - it would not start up at all - no life, nothing happens. Remove the new cable - starts as usual, no issues. So I have asked the seller to replace and I will update you when that happens. I suspect the cable is faulty.

I believe I was having faulty cable issues, too. I was nervous because I had trouble with new HDD cables twice, but my third attempt was a success and my mid-2012 MacBook seems to be running smoothly now.
