All I see is you bent up the connector body, you didn't unplug the connection.
Think of it like a power cord plug connecting into a wall plate, a male connector end and a female connector end. The connection is straight out following the direction of the batteries cable, like the lamp cord.
Lets look at the Step 3 images:

Post other pics as I can't tell from what you posted either!
You should have said that in the first place!
I gave you better images from within the guide! Your question on taking the battery out aimed me to what your issue was.
Did you see how the connector fits by comparing the two images in Step 3. Go back and note the inserted and slid out connector.
I updated with more photos.
