Why does water run into my washer when it’s not even plugged in?

We just moved into our first home! We were gifted a 2002 whirlpool washer and dryer. We ended up running it empty just to make sure everything was fine. Then saw it was leaking water. We just assumed it was because the washer was so old so we bought a new Maytag washer and dryer. When they installed the washer and hookEd up the water hoses everything was fine. Turn on the cold water hose, still fine. But then when they turn the hot water hose on water begins to enter the washer, which hadn’t even been plugged in. Don’t know what’s wrong. Please help!

it might have been unpluged in the middle of a cycle. Just let it run through a cycle.

Hi @madelinegm ,

What is the model number of the washer?

It may be that the washer’s hot water inlet solenoid valve is stuck open due to grit lodging in the valve preventing it from closing properly or perhaps the valve has gone faulty.

Try filling the tub by running a hot water wash cycle and check if the leak is still there after the machine has filled and the water has supposedly shut off. Drain the water and maybe try this two or three times to make sure that the valve has been flushed as best as possible.

Most washers use hot water, when selected, on the wash part of the cycle only and not on the rinse cycles that follow, usually this is cold water, so check your model’s user manual to see. Just to save time waiting for the machine to fill again with hot water on rinse in case it doesn’t.

If the valve now seals properly, check the filters located in the washer end of each of the hoses that connect to the hot and cold water supply to make sure that they’re intact and not broken etc, which could allow in any grit that may be present in the water supply to enter into the machine and possibly get lodged in the inlet solenoid valves.

This is either low water pressure or a failing water inlet valve.
