Mac Identification all models

Since model identification is critical to what we do here, I find I spend an inordinate amount of time making sure we're talking about the same thing. Does anyone know of a site that gives Part Number, Model Number and the EMC Number for the different models.

Welcome to the club. We spend way too much of our time working on this. Believe it or not, this is actually a problem specific to Apple. Most manufacturers make it much easier to identify machines. Apple's insistence on calling every version 'MacBook' or 'iBook' makes life challenging.

Point people to our ID-Your-Mac system as much as possible; it's designed for anyone to be able to follow.

We also have a model # lookup built into our parts pages that cross-links to answers once you ID the machine.

When identifying a machine, be as general as possible, but as specific as necessary.

It would be to your benefit to include all the ID's you can including part numbers and EMC's.. As well as a search engine destination as THE most comprehensive Mac identification site.

that's kind of why I'd like ifixit to ADD the other identifiers to their list of EMC numbers - then you could easily correlate info that you find on other sites that use Machine ID, model numbers, or Apple's verbose description. I notice you list EMC 2374 as either a 2.66GHz or 2.8GHz quad core iMac 27" - there are equivalently described by Apple as "iMac 27-inch (Late 2009) models, and in Mactracker and in System Profiler you can see these have Machine IDs of iMac11,1. Of course Apple's generic description could also include the Core2Duo version in this example, but that one has a different Machine ID (iMac10,1) and presumably a different EMC. anyhow listing all these identifiers in one place would be helpful IMO

by the way, are EMC numbers only used on iMac models?? the laptops seem to use Annn-style designators (another reason I think the Machine ID style in combo with Apple's official designation is more universal). Oh, and BTW a suggestion for your iMac id page - why not list the description of the machine beside the 4 digit EMC codes on that page? for example add the corresponding Apple description plus Machine ID and model number? just a thought

sorry for so many comments :) but one more thing to add: it's HARD to look up the EMC number of my 27" iMac (it's on the bottom of the stand and it's HEAVY!!) Much easier to look up the Machine ID in System Profiler. Not a factor for smaller/lighter machines of course, and if your machine won't boot then System Profiler is useless. Then again once in a while you encounter a machine where the externally marked number is worn off. So no single identifier is always useful IMO.

The problem with the machine ID (iMac11,1) is that they can refer to multiple machines with different screen sizes. We have incorporated them into the Model # search in the store when possible, but further ID is often needed...

It's a fine balance to try to achieve to have 1) complete information (that often confuses less-familiar people (otherwise known as our customers)) and 2) specific identifying information (that often helps ID a machine for a beginner, but frustrates experts in its incomplete-ness). We'll see what we can do to improve.

I like to use the Mactracker app, although it doesn't list the EMC numbers which seem to be favoured here on ifixit

on the other hand, Mactracker does list the "Machine ID" code and the Apple style general names, for example :

"iMac 11,1" which is what Apple refers to in their documentatio as a: 27" iMac (Late 2009) Core i7 machine. These latter style descriptors are what you will find in some of Apple's support and discussion group sites and other places.

also the machine ID (e.g. iMac 11,1) is what shows up in System Profiler on each Mac, so personally I find this more useful than the EMC number which is only physcally stamped on the machine (and is sometimes worn out!). However I think the machine ID numbers sometimes apply to a family of machines of same type but different CPU speeds

I wish ifixit would additionally add the Machine ID numbers to the model id info :)

while I'm at it I may as well mention Apple's own page for identifying Mac models

Try going to Apple and entering a EMC #. I get no results, using their search engine. Am I doing something wrong?

yeah Apple doesn't seem to use the EMC numbers in most public documentation, from what I can tell. In most places they like to refer to models using their verbose name e.g. "iMac 27-inch (Late 2009)". in disussions.apple.com you will often find mention of the Machine ID numbers e.g. iMac11,1
