My battery only charges if I unplug/plug from logic board

Hi everyone, greetings. Sorry for my bad english. I will try to explain my problem as well as possible.

The last tuesday my MacBook was working correctly until the night. Then, I disconnect it from power cord as usual I do. Well, the next morning, I connect the MagSafe to the MacBook, and it wasn’t charging! I thought: - maybe it´s the plug -, so I tried another one, but the same thing happened. So, I opened the bottom case of the MacBook to look for something wrong with the AC jack on the logic board, but I can’t find anything. Also I tried to disconnect the battery, press the power button for 10 - 20 seconds and reconnect the battery, but it didn’t work. Then, disconnect the battery again, connect de MagSafe and surprise! After a few seconds, the MagSafe led turn on, first green and then orange, and the computer turned on by itself. I repeated this 3 times and it worked the same. So I thought: - what will happen if I connect the battery after the MagSafe? - I tried and again surprise! The battery was charging as usual.

However, if I disconnect the MagSafe, I need to repeat this process, but yesterday I disconnected / connected the MagSafe 5 times and recognized it all. So I let the battery charge to 100% and it did it without problems. Then I disconnected / connected the MagSafe and it didn’t recognize it again, but hey! It was already charged and that calmed me down a bit.

So, the problem:

If I connect the MagSafe with the battery connected to the logic board, it doesn’t recognize the MagSafe and doesn’t charge the battery. On the other hand, if I first connect the MagSafe, the machine turns on by itself, and then I connect the battery, it works perfect.

What is the problem? Will the battery need to be changed?

Note: the battery in this MacBook has never been replaced. It has 888 cycles and the condition according to System Information is normal.

Hope you can help me, thanks in advance.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

Yes, it does sound like your battery has failed.

Thanks for your answer Dan. The screenshot is already uploaded (this capture is with the charger connected; again it does not recognize it).

I’m thinking your charging logic on the main logic board is damaged. There is a set of MOSFET’s which switch the power between the charger to the battery and logic board. This will need someone with deeper skills to fix as well as access to the needed parts. The other direction is just replacing the logic board.

Frankly, given the costs of either repair/replace of the logic board and the need for a new battery, I wonder if it makes economic sense to fix. It might be time to jump to a new system (used or new) as being the wiser direction.

Thanks. So, you mean this part:

MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2013-Early 2015) MagSafe 2 DC-In Board

https://es.ifixit.com/Tienda/Mac/MacBook...

Just today after posting my problem I received that part. I bought it yesterday after searching a lot on the internet. I really thought that was it, I didn't want to think that it was the entire logic board. When testing it, everything was the same, so I put the original back.

In short, it is a problem of the entire logic board, right? What could have caused? The age of the computer, the charger, or what?

@mrfantastic -Sadly, it's the Main logic board $430 plus a new battery $100 is a bit of change to spend on an older system.

Thanks for your help Dan. You're right, it's not worth spending a lot of money to repair an old MacBook. Maybe the best option is to sell it for parts, get some money and buy a new system. It's bad news, but unfortunately it is.
