Is my SMC already damaged?
Hi,
Happy holidays to you but for me.. uhmm.
Anyways, I did a really stupid thing of messing up with my macbook. First, i broke the charger just like the picture below.
But the worst part is that, i tried putting it back temporarily to retrieve my files i need urgently which i think it short circuited the system. It blacked out suddenly and when I turned it back on the fans starts to make a loud sound which never happened before. And it already cannot detect the battery. When i check the settings it says “current battery charge: 0%” and i cannot check the box where i it will show the battery status.
I tried the Apple Hardware Test and it said “The battery was not detected”.
At the moment i havent fixed my charger and a cannot buy yet since it will take a while to order online and i cannot go to the mall because of the pandemic.
I still have enough battery life if i estimate it right and other than those i’ved mentioned the macbook is still working properly. I dont have extra charger that i can try with. So the macbook is still turning on even with 0% battery (as indicated) and without charger.
My question is, is there a possibility that the SMC is damaged? Or is it only the battery or the charger or other minor parts that needs replacement? Because if it’s the SMC or the logic board, i’d rather buy another unit that spend more money for the replacement for that which i thick is very expensive.
I really need your opinion on this.
Thank you in advance.
Update (01/10/2021)
Hi!
I’m sorry it took me a while to give an update. But here’s the good news. My macbook is back to normal now almost. I just want to share what i did hoping it could help others too.
Instead of buying a new charger which is rather expensive for me, i tried buying the cable alone (just like in the picture) and replaced the broken one which is very cheap since i dont want to spend more money knowing that it would really fix the main problem which is the undetected battery and the loud noise from the fan.
Then i tried it now and voila! it worked! thank God
The charger’s led is working fine. The battery level is rising though it started from 1% and the loud noise from the fan is now gone. The battery’s status now is “Service Recommended” which i think needs replacement soon. But the important thing is my macbook is now working. Also many thanks to @geekinaroundllc and @danj for sharing your knowledge and assisting me on this. :)
