Several keys not working

Several keys suddenly stopped working including power button, although the latter will work if connected to charger (other keys still not working). Unfortunately I need some of the other keys for my login password and shift, command and option keys don’t work, so cannot open in other modes. Identical keys do not work when using external USB keyboard. Any help appreciated.

@timwang - Did you have a liquid spill at someone into the keyboard? If not it sounds like a battery issue here.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

What can happen is the battery swells up pressing from below causing keyboard issues.

Then I have to assume you had a liquid spill at some point which is messing you up.

You’ll need to replace either the upper case (which is the easier fix) or replace the keyboard which is much more work MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Upper Case Replacement

Thanks for the suggestion, but the same keys are not working on an external USB keyboard so I do not think the fault is with the keyboard. I did not have a liquid spill.

If that's true then I would check the keyboard input. Go into System Preferences > Keyboard, click on the Input Sources tab. What is the active keyboard input in the left column?

Also while here check on the Show Input menu in menu bar. So now you should see the flag in the menu.

In addition go the Keyboard tab and check on the Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar (if you are using more than one language).

So now from the menu bar click on the flag to to get to the keyboard viewer and then you should be able to check your keyboards keys. So as you press the keys the viewer will show the action.

Thank you once again for your advice. However, as I mentioned, since several keys on the keyboard do not work, I am unable to enter my password to login and so cannot open anything including preferences. I cannot open it any other mode (command, option and shift keys not working) apart from 'guest' which just gives me access to Safari and nothing else.

@timwang - You have an enigma!

Without having a working internal keyboard you can't get in! And you are telling me you can't get an external keyboard working either so you can't get in!

At this point I would leverage a second 2012 13" MacBook Air. Transferring the logic board to it to isolate the issue down.

Thanks. In that case I will need to take it to a repairer. Unfortunately Apple are not interested as they suggest my machine is too old. Thanks for all your advice.
