Why battery not charge, but computer work while conected to cable?

My MacBook Core 2 works if connected to the current. The magnetic connector shows a green light. However, if I remove the cable it turns off immediately. I thought it was the battery, so I got a new one. Same problem. I think the battery is not charging. What else should I try?

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

I am running Linux on this computer. I'll see if I can get some similar app, thanks.

@danielchsny - Sorry I don't know of any Linux tool that does the same thing. You'll need to create a Mac bootable drive (FireWire 400 or CD/DVD) This series won't boot under USB. You'll need OS-X Snow Leopard (10.6.8)

из

@danielchsny If you are running Linux, I'm assuming it's Debian/Ubuntu based. If so, you have a few options. You can do what @danj says which is probably best because Apple really does monitor all it's hardware or you can install a few linux apps.

"sudo apt install tlp" to install the TLP package (or yum it if you are RedHat/Cent/Fedora), once installed, you can run it "sudo tlp-stat -b". This should give you what LINUX KNOWS.

"sudo tlp-stat -s" gives you system info. Be aware that in Linux, you will have to interpret the data yourself.

I highly recommend you install OSX (aka macOS) as per @danj recommendation because he can assist you better with this machine on OSX.

@danj Thanks for the help. Any idea where I can find Leopard OS? It looks apple already removed from the site. Thanks

At this point its wack-a-mole time! You’ll need to replace the parts one at a time to see what fixes your system from a second system that works.

I think that’s just going to far given the age as well as the costs. Just accept its a line powered laptop and save your pennies for a newer system.

So, I will replace parts one by one. I know this is a very old computer. I am doing this just for fun, so I am not worried about killing it or spending too much money on an old computer. What would be the first part to test? I was thinking of the battery connector? the magnetic plug? any advice on this?

из

As we don't know the state of the battery it would be the first thing I would replace.

Basically, you need a second working system to borrow parts from or in case of the battery test it in the working system which is running OS-X Snow Leopard so you can see what its status is.

из

Many years ago I bought a new battery but did not work. So, I guess is not the battery. I do not have a second system from borrow or test. I tried so badly to get the Leopard running, I download the .dmg file from DunCanP's link, and burn a CD but didn't boot from that CD (i tried d, c, option, etc key and none boot from CD. What information do you expect to get from the CoconutBatery software? What are the options depending on that software? Thanks!

@danielchsny from your tlp command output, linux cannot see the battery because the computer cannot see the battery. tlp pulls the data from the ACPI which is "Advance Configuration and Power Interface" and since the computer doesn’t see it, the operating system doesn’t either.

It is possible to get a better understanding of the problem by following @danj ‘s recommendation of running the AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

Go to this github https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardware... and follow the step to installing it. Since you are only installing a diagnostic tool on your Apple hardware, it’s not illegal to do. Go down to the MACBOOK section and select the MACBOOK2,1. This is the earliest version of the test (I’m not sure the macbook1,1 came with the test, @danj would know better).

Instructions are further down the page so read it all before proceeding. This will give you Apple specific feedback on Apple specific hardware and @danj can help you further (possibly).

Thank you I will try to download the diagnostic tool

из

Thanks for the link. I download the .img and followed the instructions more or less. Since the MacBook 4,1 will not boot from USB, I copy the USB to a DVD (in Linux using dd). I do not know if that step is the reason why it didn't boot.

Why did you ask to download the macbook2,1 instead of the 4,1?

из

@danielchsny because your post states the macbook you have in the top right. If you made a mistake (or I did), then give the 4,1 a try. Also you'll get more appropriate codes from the AHT because it's closed architecture (Apple designed the board and the test). So it can give you a detailed info about the error. TLP and similar apps that run in Linux is a broad net that is meant to support all hardware, so it's not a specialist in terms of specific hardware.

This is why I think the AHT test will give you better results to the actual problem, short of taking it to Louis Rossman. :)
