Hi Gerald. Just to confirm, do the photos taken with the camera have spots in them when viewed on an external device such as a computer?

If there are spots in the digital photos, it is likely dust between the lens elements or dust on the camera sensor. Before you take the camera apart, give the camera a good blast of compressed air. Use compressed air on the lens when it is extended and when the camera is in the off state. If you use a shop air compressor, make sure to regulate down the pressure so you don’t cause any potential damage if you have a high PSI compressor. The compressed air may be enough to move any dust around that could be causing the problem. Test the camera again and see if the spots remain in the photos.

While I admire your willingness to clean the sensor and improve your camera, you will need to take the entire camera apart to remove the lens from the sensor. You will need to disassemble the camera body, remove the main pcb and then remove the sensor from the back of the plastic housing which houses the lens. This may take about an hour if you have not disassembled a camera before.

If it is just dust on the sensor, you should be able to carefully wipe the sensor with lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth or a lens tissue and get the camera back up and running. However, it is possible that there is dust between the lens elements as well. Disassembling a lens is a very tedious process and there is a large chance that you will leave the lens worse off than if you have not disassembled it at all. There is also the issue of proper planar lens alignment after disassembly.

As with any repair, it is important to weigh your time vs the value you will get out of the repair. You may be better off finding another SD1300 on ebay for $15-$20 that does not have dust in the lens (make sure to ask the sellers).

Good luck!
