New dual drive SSD (in place of optical drive) not recognised

Hi all,

This is my first post here, so I hope I can find some answers!

Today I attempted to install a dual SSD (in place of the optical drive) in my iMac 21.5 inch mid 2010 (EMC 2389), using the dual drive install guide (Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Dual Drive). I used a Samsung Evo 850 500GB 2.5inch SSD, along with the iFixit dual hard drive enclosure (iMac & Mac mini Dual Drive Enclosure).

Everything went well (apart from me damaging one of the temperature sensor cables, but that’s a separate issue) however upon switching the computer on, the new SSD is not recognised and doesn’t come up in the Disk Utility. I confirmed the SSD works prior to installation as I have an external SATA caddy that I used to format it.

This leads me to believe that either there’s an issue with the dual hard drive enclosure, or the cable that connects it to the logic board is faulty (although the optical drive was working fine before this installation).

I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue and if there’s a workaround, by bypassing the enclosure and connecting the SSD directly to the logic board? I assume I’d need some kind of enclosure with an adaptor, as the connector that connects the optical drive to the logic board is a different shape and size than is required by the SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks
