Dishwasher won't drain when hot.

My Whirlpool dishwasher (WDT720PADM2) won’t drain during or at the end of the cycle. You can hear the motor running during the cycle and at the end, but no water drains. There is dirty water in the bottom of the dishwasher when it finishes. If I hit the cancel/drain button immediately after the cycle ends, it won’t drain, but if I wait for it to cool (about 30-60 minutes), it drains completely. There doesn’t appear to be any kind of clog, because the water flow is strong when it drains.

This problem has been happening intermittently for over 2 years. Two years ago, I bought a replacement pump, but the dishwasher started working before it arrived. Off and on, this has continued to happen for a few weeks at a time, and we just run a rinse cycle until it fixes itself.

I ended up replacing the pump, but it didn’t make a difference. Any ideas?

01 - Drain Pump

The drain pump uses an impeller to force water through the drain hose. If the drain pump motor is not working, the dishwasher won’t drain. To determine if the drain pump is defective, check the pump motor for continuity using a multimeter. If the motor does not have continuity, or if is getting power but won’t run, replace the drain pump. Drain pumps are not repairable—if the drain pump is defective, you must replace it.

02 - Pump and Motor Assembly

The motor drives an impeller to force water out of the drain hose. If the motor runs during the drain cycle, check for a blockage in the drain line. If the motor won't run during the drain cycle or if it just hums when it should be running, the pump and motor assembly might need to be replaced.

03 - Clogged or Improperly Installed Garbage Disposer

If the garbage disposer was installed recently, the drain plug may not have been removed. All garbage disposers are sold with a solid plug in the drain tube. If the dishwasher is not connected to the garbage disposer, the plug must remain in the drain tube. However, if the dishwasher is connected to the garbage disposer, the plug must be removed. If the garbage disposer wasn't replaced recently, it is possible that the disposer is clogged. Remove the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer and clean out both the fitting on the disposer and the end of the drain hose. These are the most common places to find an obstruction if the dishwasher won't drain.

04 - Drain Hose

The drain hose might be clogged. To unclog the drain hose, remove the drain hose from both the dishwasher and the sink drain and clean it out. The drain hose is most commonly clogged near the garbage disposer or dishwasher drain branch tailpiece.

You "answered" the question without reading it. The poster said she replaced the pump and the problem persists, and that when the pump does work it empties just fine so the problem is not a clog. I have this same problem and it is temperature related -- when the water is hot it won't empty but when it cools down it will. And I have also swapped out the pump and it has done nothing. There is something else going on that has nothing to do with the pump or a clog.

@entropy23891 have you tried to run the diagnostics as suggested by @jayeff ?

No, I don't have the equipment to run those diagnostics I'm afraid. What I was hoping to find was, broadly, an answer to where the problem likely resides. If it isn't in the pump, the drain hose, and it's temperature related and inconsistent, what dishwasher component could lead to this? Could a faulty high limit thermostat, for example, interfere with the drain pump? A solenoid drain valve that might get stuck when hot?

You don't need equipment to run the diagnostics.

You only need equipment to test the components once the diagnostics have indicated what the problem is , by the error code that is being displayed.

The error codes will indicate whether it is a heating or draining problem for a start

See p.6 how to start the diagnostic tests and then view the error codes

I have the same problem. The drain pump will only run when it is cold. The diagnostic codes I get point to the drain pump, but as Entropy stated, replacing the drain pump did not solve the problem. I have a new pump on the way but my current drain pump has good continuity and seems fine...

Hi @shepherdess6 ,

To add to the answer above, here's the Tech Sheet - W10610059 - Rev B (EN) for the dishwasher.

Run the diagnostics program as outlined in the tech sheet and check if any error codes are generated by the program. If so the codes and the reason for them are shown in the tech sheet.
