MBP needs charger to wake up from sleep mode (new battery, charged)

I have a problem with waking up my MBP after leaving it for a few hours in sleep mode. It had its battery replaced 2 weeks ago and I already encountered this problem a few times. I use my MBP with or without charger, then I close the lid and put it to sleep. The battery is charged (for example 80%, 50% etc). I disconnect the charger and leave the laptop on the desk or put it to my backpack. After few hours of being in sleep mode, when I want to open it again, I get the black screen with the icon that the battery is drained and that I need to connect the charger. When I connect the charger it wakes up and the battery seems to has the same charge amount as when put to sleep. After waking up I can unplug the charger and work on battery without any further issues.

It happened just a few times with my previous battery (during more than 5 years), but after a long time of use and only while I took the laptop outdoors and it was rather cold outside. Now it is happening indoors too and almost every time after leaving laptop for a few hours.

Today I did the SMC reset but didn’t help.

I have the exact same problem, with the same machine. Replaced the battery 3 weeks ago and my mac wont wake up if the charger isnt plugged in even if the battery is charged. Did you find a solution yet?

из

@_ mouseman Unfortunately not. I'm going to do a clean install soon and see if anything is going to change. A few ongoing projects hold me back but hope I'll be able to finally do it this month.

Also noticed that if I leave my mac in sleep mode unplugged and after a few hours I plug the charger back without waking it up, then it wakes up normally.

@msz I just tried deleting the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" File I had two weird files with cryptic names +com.apple.PowerManagement.plist in the folder too and deleted them. There seems to be an AutoWake.plist for some users that can be deleted as well. I will put my Mac to sleep now and see if that helped. You can find the files on Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences

I'm having the same problem after installing a new iFixit battery, whenever the laptop is asleep for more than a few hours. I tried an SMC reset and also deleting the plist files, and no joy. The battery is clearly fine and healthy but for some reason it needs wall power to jump it back to life from sleep. Did a clean install fix the problem?

из

Hi @ameliapond. Unfortunately not, clean install didn't fix anything. One thing that I've noticed over time is that the time after the MBP needs charger to jump start is longer. For example at the beginning leaving it unplugged overnight would be 100% unable to start in the morning. Now it would usually wake up unless I'm not leaving it for few more extra hours. Still looking for an answer.

The issue is the battery itself. I called ifixit and told them my issue; they told me the battery is probably defective and shipped me a new one. After installing the new one, the issue is gone. I advise anyone who is experiencing this and has already tried the SMC reset and deleting the files in ~/Library/Preferences to reach out to whoever you bought the battery from and ask for a replacement/refund. Hope this helps.

Thanks! May sound obvious but haven't thought of that. I still had my 1 year warranty for the replacement battery so I got it replaced once again. It turned out that some of the batteries were faulty and caused that issue. I'm testing the new one for a few days now and it seems that everything works fine.

It worked for me, so i’ll post it again as an answer:

Delete the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" file and all .plist files with “PowerManagement” and “AutoWake” in the name in the same folder.

You find these files under -/Library/Preferences/

Thank you. Glad it worked for you. I deleted the files and left it unplugged overnight. Unfortunately the problem still persists.

Experiencing the same issue, this fix did not work. Anyone have any other ideas?

из

@bilbobagginss Unfortunately, the issue is still present. What I've noticed recently is that sometimes even after really long sleep time the computer wakes up. Sometimes it needs a little longer to light up the screen. But in most cases it's just a drained battery icon and MBP needs a jump start with a charger.

I tried all these fixes and reset the SMC. Same issue. I also replaced my battery recently.

I reset the SMC as well but nothing has changed. Is it related to my battery? I see a “service recommended” alert under the battery icon.

mid 2015 macbook pro DG. I replaced the OEM battery with a ZYTH battery. After 15 charge cycles I experienced this problem where on wake-up it showed a depleated battery icon on the screen and required power supply connect to wake. I reset the SMC and now it works. Short (minutes), medium (few houes) and long (many hours) sleep not on power and it will wake fine. So sometimes its not a chronic problem. But... maybe it will return. For now, that was my solution. FYI I get 3-7h on the battery - impressive!
