Screen Turns Black randomly

Hey there!

So the story starts this way. My logic board died randomly and I had to replace it. After replacement I got all new computer and while installing the apps back I randomly started to have this black screen, or better said black desktop problems. Took it to the repair shop they said they can’t do anything because they don’t know what is it and how to reproduce it, but that it is most likely software problem. So they have reset NVRAM and all that hustle and the problem persisted. Then they reinstalled the system completely - problem still persisted. Then I created a partition on computer and installed all new system and the problem persisted.

At this point the shop tells me that they don’t know what the problem is and how to reproduce it and therefore there is no problem. I was wondering if maybe someone here have heard of similar issues?

The thing is that the black lines appear completely random. I can open safari they appear or just use zoom and all of the sudden they pop up. This bug appears only in 1 desktop, when switched other ones are clear. Also very interesting when taking a screenshot of the screen it doesn’t detect the black areas and leaves them in “alfa channel”

When connect to external display the issue is more likely to appear in the moment when your screen goes all weird and black for a second >> after that it’s very common for it to appear. Interesting enough it never appears on external screen.

My guess would be some issue with graphic card responsible for the mac screen itself, since it never happens on the other one (which from what I understand uses another graphics)

Ouch! This is video RAM getting messed up.

To be clear you got a replacement system Vs getting yours fixed. Also you went to an Apple authorized repair or Apple Store for the repairs? Please fill us in as the direction moving forward will likely be different.

Where do you live? Country and nearest city.

@sssashamoroz - You'll need to go back use the picture you posted here to explain the video RAM is bad. This could be a simple solder joint issue or the chip its self is failing.

I did! But since the issue appears randomly the rapairment shop said they can’t reproduce the issue… and that they have never seen this before

@sssashamoroz - You need a new logic board, You'll need to push things up the food chain, talk with the repair manager, then the store, if neither offers a solution, you'll need to contact Apple Mexico to get your issue resolved. The only rub I can see here is the window of warranty maybe at the end or closed, so you will need to express how long you've not had the system working so the collective time of your use ideally is less than the warranty window based on the written records and if you have a diary that will help.

If Apple Mexico is unable to help you you'll then need to talk directly with Apple US in Cupertino CA. You might find emailing big Tim might work as well. Make sure you've documented everything and don't get snooty as that will turn them off. Express how your school or work has suffered not having a working system.

Thats the best I can offer you
