MacBook Pro Early 2011 not turning on, how to fix?

Hi everyone!

i have MacBook Pro Early 2011 quad i7 and it is not turning on. i suppose it is the faulty AMD graphics from this era but is there a way to fix this? Can I deactivate them any way and use HD 3000 for a considerate price. Thanks !

The easiest test is to disconnect the battery, press the power button to clear the SMC latch state. Now plug in the battery and the MagSafe. Now when you restart your system just as you here the gong press the T key to enter into Target disk mode!

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

At this point your display should be showing the FireWire or Thunderbolt Icon. If it does you’ve proved the Intel graphics engine is working! Now if you restart your system again your AMD GPU will kick in at the end of the POST cycle and your system will either go to a black or white screen or in some cases colorful blocks/bands.

There are a few different ways to lock out the AMD GPU so you’re left with the Intel graphics only. But you’re stuck with nothing higher than Sierra

Edit the NVRAM variable from Single-User mode or use fxCardStatus to use the intergraded graphics. But if you loose the setting you’ll need to start again.

You can also use this DeMux from DosDude this will allow you to go upto High Sierra.

Hi Dan,

I'm experiencing a similar if not the same issue as sokanye.

My MacBook Pro (early 2011) won't boot. It performs at least some of the hardware checks: The optical drive activates, the HDD starts spinning, the front indicator light is on, the fans spin normally fast. But, the screen stays black and no start-up chime sounds.

I did already use gfx as a precaution before, because I experienced some graphic issues similar to the ones when I had to have the discrete graphics repaired. Then at one point, when it was running with the screen turned off, I couldn't activate the screen. I couldn't get it running again since that time.

I've tried several things. Your solution as well. My last idea is to try to run it on Linux. What do you think?

Cheers

Felix

@Felix Kaeufer - You maybe chasing your tail here ;-{

Let’s get a better view of your battery and charger, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

Could be… :D

I think, I had CoconutBattery installed. The battery is pretty new (2nd replacement from iFixit), the charger is not, but also not visibly damaged.

I can't boot the machine, so how is CoconutBattery going to help? Is there a way to plug in for example a Raspberry Pi to analyse the hardware condition?

Of course, I can't rule out other damages, like broken cables. But before it started I had the Macbook running 24/7 to do BOINC tasks, so I believe it was in a relatively good condition.

@Felix Kaeufer - Well, that does complicate things if you can't even run the system. Lets do this disconnect the battery, then with nothing connected press and hold the power button to discharge the logic. Now with the system on its side with the MagSafe output up carefully plugin the charger, at that point your system should start up spontaneously! Did it?

It does two or three times. First, at least the optical drive gets tested. During the second power up, along with testing the optical drive the indicator light flashes five times (presumably meaning "no battery"). Finally, the optical drive gets tested again. The fans spin at a normal speed. The screen stays black and even shining through the logo nothing can be seen on the screen.
