MacBook restarts when connected to external Apple Thunderbolt Display

Hello,

My macbook(s) randomly hangs and restarts when connected to external Apple Thunderbolt Display. This been an issue for a while now with 4 different MacBooks that ran different MacOS. The only variable that is common is Apple Thunderbolt Display, without external monitors these macbooks work just fine.

Restart usually happen after period of inactivity: when Macbook wakes up from sleep or gets connected to the external monitor. Macbook briefly becomes unresponsive then crashes and reboots.

It’s probably time to upgrade to USB-C monitor, but after 6+ years Apple Thunderbolt Display rans just like new.

I would focus on the AC power side of things first. Are you using the same power strip (surge suppressor) also check your cords to make sure the grounding pins are present. You might also want to check the outlet which you are using is properly wired and grounded. I recommend this simple tool to check 120-Volt Analog Receptacle Tester

Also try a different MagSafe charger if you are not using the Displays MagSafe connection . Do you find the issue is when you use the displays connector or when you are using the chargers connection?

Thanks! I recently replaced outlet to which both MacBook and Display are connected. Issue persisted before and after outlet replacement. Two of my macbooks are newer models with usb-c only connectivity, so they not using MagSafe connection. Two older macbooks used to be connected to display's magsafe power, but issue persisted then as well.

@andy_l - For the 2016 onward systems which adapter are you using to get to the required Thunderbolt1 connection.

Same problem persist to me when connecting to the MacBook Pro with thunderbolt external apple display. may be it is because MacBook Pro is not compatible with thunderbolt external display. MacBook Pro is connected to c ports to Thunderbolt Display through apple c- thunderbolt apple converter. It is serious issue as it drains battery and restart the system. Need attention soon.
