Model A1419 / EMC 3070 / Mid 2017 / 3.4, 3.5 or 3.8 GHz Core i5 or 4.2 GHz Core i7 Kaby Lake Processor (ID iMac18,3) / Retina 5K display. Refer to the older iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display (Late 2014 & 2015) guides as the system is very similar.

Check for the correct display/panel part number

I've had the display my 2017 iMac replaced at a shop and according to the receipt the correct part LM270QQ1 (SD)(C1) should have been installed. Unfortunately, it has several issues that make me question this:

  • It seemed less bright at first and the display settings menu now showed the image of a generic display instead of the iMac – since the store assured me it's the correct model and I couldn't check, I accepted that
  • After about a year the display shows strong image retention, an issue that was common in the previous 2015 iMac

So far I could gather the manufacture date using EDID information which is mid 2015 and confirms my suspicion. Also according to a thread on macrumors, the model found in ColorSync is 0000AE07 which matches the older model and not 0000AE13. I wasn't able to find these numbers anywhere else, so I can't verify if this makes sense.

I'd like to test a new screen to see that it actually is the right model and also have something to show to the store where I had the current one installed:

  1. Is there anywhere else I can see if it it's the right panel either by model number or an output of what the maximum brightness is?
  2. Can I connect and check the screen before replacing the old one with an external cable?

What I can tell you is the Apple P/N for your systems display is 661-07323 and the marking on the display should be LM270QQ1 (SD)(C1)

The 2017 has a brighter NITS screen than the 2015 which is Apple P/N 661-03255 the display is marked LM270QQ1 (SD)(B1). It had its issues! Ghosting being a big one

LCD panel with image persistence (ghosting) when left static for periods of time.

Now you’re is a no win position here! To validate the part you need to check its markings on the back side of the assembly

But the act of getting to it offers the shop an out as you invalidated their warrantee!

You also risk damaging the display just in the process of taking it off, if you don’t have the needed skills and tools, review this guide iMac 27" 2017 Display Replacement

Thanks for sharing.

In case it's the wrong display the warranty shouldn't be an issue, it would have to be changed anyway. I'm concerned the display may have the wrong part number marked on the back.

Given the issues it has and the manufacturing date and model number in ColorSync I've extracted, I'm quite certain that it's the wrong part, but it still might have been sourced from a supplier that marked it incorrectly.

I'm trying to see if there's any more information I can extract or use the model number ColorSync provides - and ideally with a new screen check before installing it.

@marca1 - The physical label is what I would use. It will have the proper LG display number. If its missing the label then that too would be suspect! These Mylar labels are not easy to fake, I doubt anyone would besides.

@danj thank you I'll check once I open it.

@danj so this is interesting: the label has the correct number, and says LG Display (I've seen a vendor where the LG part is scratched off, apparently selling refurbished displays, this wasn't the case here). The model ID in color sync is wrong though (0000AE07 instead of 0000AE13) and in the display menu of system settings it shows up as an external display.

Changed the display, now it shows the right number and as an iMac in system settings, also seems brighter.

I really wonder how it got the right label.

@marca1 - Creative seller ;-{ Likely had a dead unit and carefully lifted it off to transfer to the other. Its also possible the display was for a different system and the T-CON board is what was different with its programing. I haven't ventured to far a field into alternative parts sources.
