Can this computer be completely upgraded? (I don't mean buy a new one)

First of all. I have already purchased a new computer. I am looking for a way to use the working components of this old laptop to make an updated useable laptop.

I have a “late 2008” Macbook Aluminum body. The screen is still working great. The trackpad and keyboard are working great. I need to replace the speakers and CD drive. A long time ago I put in a SSD which gave it several years of new life. But now it is just too old to run useful programs. In my naive mind I feel there should be a way to take out all the internal components and put in new hardware that will work with the current screen, keyboard, and trackpad. It breaks my heart to think that it will be useless and thrown out, I know that the “recycling programs” don’t actually effectively recycle all the valuable components.

Are there any other hopeful souls out there that have found a way to frankenstein their old Macbooks back to life?

Thanks

The word Completely implies different things to different people. This system is one of the more serviceable systems Apple has produced. And some elements can be upgraded like the RAM from 2GB to 8GB and the storage from the original 160 or 256GB HDD it has to a a much bigger HDD or even jump to a SSD (as long as the drive is able to run at the slower 3.0 Gb/s SATA II interface this series has. Many newer drives today are fixed speed 6.0 Gb/s SATA III which are to fast for this system. There are some auto sense drives which can run at the slower speed as they sense the systems port I/O and match it. As an example a Samsung 870 EVO SSD offers this ability as you can see in the spec sheets Interface line:

SATA 6 Gb/s Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s & 1.5 interfaces

Make sure what ever drive you get clearly states that it is able to run at the slower speed. The standard was written so slower drives would work in newer systems not the other way around.

As far as altering most everything else, you can replace with like but not better. There is no commonality of the logic board or display assembly with todays systems if that is what you where thinking. Desktop systems are a different story! Laptops are very much custom.

Thank you @danj

Yes, I have had a Samsung SSD in the computer for many years and it made a huge difference when I first put it in. I have also maxed out the RAM.

I am looking for the unattainable dream of being able to put in newer internal hardware (motherboard etc) so that it can run the newest operating system and the new programs.

I know that it is pretty much impossible for laptops (especially Apple) but I figured if there was someplace that people try to do something like that, it would be in this type of community. I am still hopeful for the future when electronics are made to be upgraded and repaired the same way things were made to be fixed in the past. I think we will get there.

Thanks again.

@teamstarr - Sadly, I don't see laptops getting to that point. When I was going to school we used mechanical slide rules for Calculus, when I got into Collage my dad got me a Bowmar Brain four function calculator! to help me out. I later got a HP-35 and then I got a programable model. Just like calculators we have today are mostly throw-away these older models held up and even repairable!

The world has moved on, we need to let it. But! That doesn't mean allowing the companies from stopping us from repair and restore! Go to a antique car show were people have painstakingly preserve these beauties! Are we going to allow computers the fade into the blackhole of the trash bin?

Haven't we seen that with other modern world? The EPA was purged of many scientific papers which took decades to document on climate change because of someone not wanting the truth to be told. Thats not the only loss from the web, libraries & even physically.

Support the Right to Repair!
