Upgrading through motherboard swap?

Hi I have a base mode MacBook pro 2016 15 inch with 2.6 i7 256 storage etc

I was thinking about upgrading it to the 2.9ghz i7 1TB storage

I found a local seller with said 2.9/1tb mobo for this model for a good price and it comes with touch id as well my question is

Can I actually do that just swap in a higher-end motherboard for the same model as long as i have its paired touchid or will there be some other issues that im unaware of?

Also would a 2017 mobo work in 2016 one ?

Before you start I would first make sure you have the latest macOS and updates applied then backup your stuff onto an external drive using TimeMachine. Once done go into FindMy and remove your system from your group. And disable any protection you have on the drive.

Last step here is reformat your systems drive and install a clean copy of macOS. I would recommend you boot up under an external bootable drive (setup just for this task) to achieve this so there is no fingerprints of yours on the system.

Now the fun stuff! Remove the logic board and be very careful with the power button/TouchID ribbon cable as its very easy to damage. Use care as its easy to snag the other cables when you put in the replacement logic board. Using the external bootable drive boot up and format and install a clean copy of macOS here we want to be sure nothing is on the drive (i.e. spyware or other persons stuff). That should do it. Now add your system into your FindMy group to make sure there is nothing hanging on it.

So basically what you are saying is that i can do the "upgrade" as long as im careful and swap the touchid button for one paired to the new mobo ?

@denuwu - Yes! The button is paired with the logic board!

Only Apple can pair Touch ID, so you will need to manually transfer the Touch ID sensor.

Im aware of that as i said the motherboard that i plan to buy comes with one so that shouldnt be an issue question is are there any other things i need to worry about or is touchid my only concern ?

@denuwu As far as I know, that is the only one.
