Extrem lagging and it's not charging the battery

Hello everybody,

my gf has the MacBook since end of 2020 and forgot it in a hot car during summer. Now the Macbook is lagging extremely and don't charge the battery. I've opened it and the battery is in good shape and don't have any damage and rest seems too from first look.

Now the Macbook needs forever to turn on(maybe like 20 min) only when connected to plug and lagging extremely(maybe up to 1 sec delay) and the fan is on max the whole time. I've tried to reset the SMC and NVRAM. Didn't do anything and the Diagnostic Tool (Starting with D pressed) says:

Reference code: PPT006 Battery needs service, it don't functions normal

Reference code: PFM006 SMC has maybe a problem

I genuinely have no clues anymore, maybe somebody has a tip. Thank you very much!

My inkling based on your description is that this is a battery related issue. There are temperature sensors in the battery that talk to the SMC and if the SMC doesn't get information from them, it kicks the computer into a protective mode. Fans ramp up to full and it throttles the CPU way down in case the reason for the missing sensor data is super high temperatures.

Lithium-ion batteries, like the one in modern MacBooks don't like extreme heat. You can't always tell if the battery is bad just by looks alone. But its time in a hot car may have just killed the battery.

Luckily, battery replacement on these is quite easy (comparatively to a MacBook Pro of the same era).
