Replacement filters - how long do they last

I bought the cleaner 4 years ago and the filter needs replacement for the second time.

Filter light on and motor hunting with a clean filter.

I would not expect filters which have been washed as recommended to require periodic replacement. Is there a fault on the machine

A general search shows Dyson V10 battery life lasting around 4 yrs, If filter washing is followed and replaced as recommended, depleted battery life may be triggering premature filter maintenance if lower suction from a worn out battery is the culprit. Is it possible to run the vacuum without the filter to see of the filter light remains off, indicating the battery may be need replacement?
