iPhone 7 no charge; Will power on, but boot loops

This one has me a little stumped..

I have an iPhone 7 that I got in a job lot. It’s cosmetically “perfect” and everything appears OK. It was missing the bottom screws which told me it had been opened. The battery wasn’t connected inside. I connected the charger (via amp meter), it draws 0 mA. Just on a whim, I tested with a known good charge port assembly, same result.

I connected it to my desk PSU with a 7 squid, and it appeared to boot just fine (no screen connected). So I connected a screen and prompted it to boot again. Apple logo and perfectly reasonable readings from the PSU, but it just keeps looping.

I have inspected the board under the microscope (though haven’t removed the shields yet) and there are no signs of anything wrong. Liquid indicators are crisp and white, no corrosion anywhere, nothing.

I have no indications of a short, as the mA’s are well within reason, so my guess was a sensor that kept it looping, but I can’t get access to the kernel logs :(

I have found with the 7 series that boot-loops are commonly caused by:

·         The top flex cable.

·         The home button flex cable connecting to the logic board.

·         Audio IC. I have found if the audio IC is the problem it will eventually boot up.

·         Baseband CPU from a botched audio IC repair. Remove the sticker and see if it has had a repair attempt on the IC.

If it has a prior repair on the audio IC it can also affect the Tristar IC as some of them are under filled. Also squids have a habit of causing boot-loops so I would suggest using a known good battery to rule out the squid.

@imicrosoldering I am very much suspecting this one has an audio IC issue. I had the logic board out yesterday, and stickers have never been touched so no previous repair indications.

I put it back together and, using the squid, tested it again. It just kept looping, but I got called away and forgot to disconnect the squid and turn off the PSU. Got back a few mins later and it was showing a welcome screen, and touch was working just fine. Turned it off and connected a known good and fully charged battery, left it looping then it turned on again. The battery indicator however, showed the battery as near depleted, which it wasn’t, and connecting to a WiFi worked, but it didn’t activate the phone in the 5-ish minutes I tested. WiFi said searching, but it showed the connected symbol.

I’ll be diving deeper into it later today after a late meeting.

So the tricky thing with iPhone 7 series is they are VERY boot loop prone. This could be any number of things, it can be difficult to narrow down. This could be an Audio IC issue, or a baseband issue, or a NAND issue.

Usually a sensor issue will allow it to boot all the way and will reboot after some time. I am more likely to think it is something else.

Is this something you need to get data off of? Or the person just wants it repaired. I might see if it will complete an update and make note of what error it gets if it fails.

@flannelist Luckily, this is my own phone (not in use), that was cosmetically the best from a lot of ~8-10kg of phones. I figured I ‘d put it in working condition and either sell cheap or hand off to someone that needs a phone, but can’t afford to buy one.

My experience with the 7 isn’t vast, as I haven’t seen many of them. I knew about the audio IC and the NAND, but thought they’d “taken care of” the baseband issues. I guess I’ll have to remove the shields for further inspection.

First thing I tried was to connect to a computer to try a flash, but there’s zero response from the lightning port both on computer and charger, even with using a known good charge assembly.

@geirandersen Never really fixed baseband that I know of, thought certainly variants are more problematic than others. You may not even really be able to see anything visibly wrong. Honestly, I would just start taking diode mode measurements just to see if anything is amiss, especially for the dock flex connector. You may not find anything.

This could even be a tristar issue. Boot loops are honestly one of the more difficult things to troubleshoot because it could be so many things.

@flannelist I’ll be taking the logic board out again later today, in order to inspect everything even closer. Focusing on the dock flex and surrounding areas, as well as testing with diode mode.

On a side note, I was able to get it to boot twice yesterday, once on the squid and once on a batter. I have now verified it will boot, but it took “forever”.

Forcing your iPhone to restart can be the key to fixing the problem if it's caused by some minor software glitches and errors. A forced restart on the iPhone 7 is done by simultaneously pressing and holding the Power button and the Volume Down button for at least 20 seconds or until the device power cycles.

Greetings,
Peter
