Can I switch my battery & screen without switching the motherboard?

This sounds stupid to ask but I just wanted to make sure but I just wanted to make sure. I wanted to transfer my battery and screen from an iPhone XS max that 64gb that's IC locked (battery and frame are good) to a XS max that is 25gb version that isn't ic locked but the screen has a green line on it and the battery is bad. Would the storage version impact size and such. Thank you kindly for any assistance.

Two people with over 10,000 reputation on this site just said it is possible and one of them provided a link. I think it's possible.

@ambushback, I'm curious as to why you made this statement. Other than memory size, the two phones are identical, using all the same hardware and software. People replace broken parts with those scavenged from junked phones all the time, so why don't you think this will work?

Switching the display and battery over shouldn’t give you any issues with overall functionality, but you will probably get some notifications about the phone’s ability to verify a genuine display or battery is installed. Even though they may be genuine Apple parts, Apple pairs these components to the board with their serial numbers so putting different parts in triggers a mismatch warning. As long as you don’t mind the notifications, then functionality should be mostly intact.

You’ll want to make sure you also swap over the front facing sensor assembly to the replacement display since Face ID components are also paired to the board and without the original components, Face ID won’t work. Realistically the only downfall would be the lack of True Tone, which can be transferred via one of the many programmers available if you want to go that route. In my opinion, it’s a pretty minor inconvenience to go without.

Hi Daniel,

When swapping parts, the memory size will have no effect; it's internal to the motherboard only.

The only thing you'll run into when switching out the screen is that you will lose the True Tone function unless you copy the serial number data from the old screen to the replacement using something like a Qian Li iCopy programmer.

I don't think you'll run into issues swapping out the battery, but my experience only goes up to the iPhone X; I know in some of the later models they serialized the battery as well as the screen. Worst case is you'll get a warning about a non-genuine battery and lose the battery health indications, but the battery will work correctly.
