MacBook Air not turning on. Clicking, when plugged in.

MacBook Air from a coworker had water spilled on it. It does not turn on when powered at all. But once I plugged it in. The cpu started to heat, and a small light had turned on the board. It is clicking but not doing anything. Is this a dying CPU or just a battery needing to be replaced?

Rakiem Geschaklt, The first thing to do is to stop trying to charge and use it! That will only worsen the damage.

Liquid damage must be repaired and you need to take the computer apart, all the way down to removing the logic board and components. Once you’ve taken the device apart (follow the guides here on iFixit, just click the device page for your selected device), you need to clean the boards and case thoroughly (but very carefully) with distilled water (not tap water, due to impurities). Use a medium hard brush (preferably ESD safe, it a toothbrush will do) and clean everything.

Once everything has been cleaned, do the same thing again to the same parts, but using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) >99%. The IPA displaces water and evaporates incredibly fast. Take care and use caution again.

Let the parts and boards dry for a few minutes, then go over the logic board very! thoroughly using a magnifying glass to inspect for damage and missed corrosion.

If everything checks out, put it back together and see if it works. If not, let us know and we can take it further.

They had it brought it to someone else first. They cleaned the interior and everything it seems, they told them that it would not power on at all. At the most from what I've been looking around is that it may just need a battery replacement?

Rakiem Geschalt, A new battery might be necessary, but the original is only two years old so we’d like to find out what “killed” the old one.

Water damage can kill the battery, especially if the computer was used/charged before the water damage was addressed.

Also, I never trust it if someone tells me it was water damaged but that was repaired by someone else, unless it’s a shop I know and trust personally.

More info trickled in from them, said they had let it dry for more than one day and then plugged it in to charge.

@Rakiem Geschalt so did it get cleaned or they just left it to dry? I'd suggest you clean it properly as suiggest by @geirandersen. Check the logicboard for corrosion and/or missing, charred looking, or otherwise damaged componets (both sides) Once porperly cleaned, repalce the battery. Then repalce the battery and do some further troubleshooting. right now it all seems a big gues. Can't fix it by guessing :-))

Throughly cleaned and checked. No damage, replaced battery. Still hearing clicking. Letting it charge to see if there is a change.
