I'm thinking about upgrading the storage of my iMac, so is there a way to replace the hard disk drive of my iMac to a 3.5" 2TB Toshiba without having fan issues? Or this problem happens only with 2.5" HDD's/SSD's?

Using a large cap drive is no problem so yes you can install it.
BUT- You will hit an issue with the fan as Apple used custom HDDs leveraging a built-in thermal sensor to manage the systems fans. So you do need to use a replacement sensor to resolve SMC need of the sensor.
You’ll need this: iMac Intel 21.5" and 27" (Mid 2011) SSD Temperature Sensor

umh, another question... this issue with the fan will happen even if the iMac is running Windows?
@martingw - mmm … I’ll be honest, I’m not sure!
The question is how you install Windows! Most folks use BootCamp running Windows concurrently with macOS so in that case you need the sensor for both.
If you treat the system as nothing different than a Intel/Windows system you will loose access to what makes a Mac a Mac! I’m suspecting as you won’t get the integration of the hardware and OS, the sensor won’t be accessed. But! At that point you loose the thermal protection SMC offers. So you will cook your system a bit shortening its life.
The bottom line here is I would use it and to clarify a point this is needed replacing the drive whether you use a HDD or SSD.
@danj You can plug a Windows 10 installer (USB) and turn on the Mac with the Option key pressed, and then you can install and use Windows like a normal PC...

Hello, I don't have experience upgrading iMacs, but I did about 15-20 minutes of research and this is what I found: It's (fairly) common to upgrade to a 3.5inch hard drive and the Toshiba you were looking at should work, but on the topic of fan issues according to a couple of questionable sources the new hard drive could have bigger heat outputs I don't know how much this would affect the Mac. I hope this help and if I find anymore information I will let you know.
