Battery doesn’t have any charge out of the box

Hello,

I have just unboxed my new macbook air m2 512GB and when i have opened the lid nothing happened. I plugged the charger and the apple logo came right away…

My question is, is it normal to recieve a brand new apple laptop whit no battery charge, or i have just got the bad luck of having a drained battery and i have to send it back?

What is the factory charge and how long is it last before doesn’t let you to turn on your brand new device?

Thank you in advance.

Update (02/12/2023)

This is the info from coconut battery.

Just to address what seems to be the original question of whether it's normal to receive a brand new laptop with a dead battery.

I would say that while it's not common to get a new system with a dead battery, that may not mean anything. It depends entirely on how much charge the battery had when it was boxed up and how long it sat on a shelf in a warehouse before it was sold. If the battery wasn't charged up fully and it sat for a long time, then yes, it's entirely possible for the battery to be dead upon receipt.

That's really a non-issue; what you want to know is how it works once it's been charged. Most electronics advise fully charging the device when you first get it, so that's the first order of business. Charge it up to 100% then see how long it lasts on battery power under normal usage. After a few cycles there should be sufficient data to say whether the battery is in working condition or not.

That’s what I was aiming for. As well as see if there was something else hidden.

The best way to figure this out is to install this gem of an App CoconutBattery

First you can learn the date the systems manufacturer as well as the battery. It can also offer useful information of both the battery and charger.

How about posting a snapshot here of CoconutBattery so we can figure this out.

I am not sure of that 3th party software.

@alex_ray, Contributors to iFixit earn ratings based on how helpful their answers are to questions. I myself have what I consider to be a respectable rating of 25k, which means I've helped a lot of people. Take a look at @danj's rating; 450+k, which means he's been around this site for a very long time and has helped a staggering number of people with their problems.

I've seen many people recommend the coconutBattery app and have heard of no issues with it. Go online and check reviews on any app you're not sure of; you won't find any indications that this one harbors any sort or malware of spyware at all; it's a straight-forward app for figuring out what shape your battery is in.

I do understand your hesitation, but given my experience working with Dan on helping other people, I would personally follow any suggestion he had, including installing this particular app.

@alex_ray, Only to confirm what @dadibrokeit is saying: @danj has been a contributor on iFixit for over 11 years, and he is a moderator on here as well, helping countless people fix their devices. I respect the hesitation when being given links or names of 3rd party apps you don’t know. A quick Google search (if you feel you can’t trust a moderator of a community as large as iFixit) will tell you all you need to know.

I use CoconutBattery constantly myself, and I suggest it to any user having an Apple device with suspected battery issues.

Battery cycle: 1

Battery condition: normal

This is what the laptop says without the app

@alex_ray - Sadly, that’s not what I was looking for. It’s the other info what CoconutBattery offers is what’s needed here to get some guidance.

I guess you need to return the system from where you bought it for an exchange to solve your question.

Think of it this way… Doc, I have a toothache but you can’t do an X-Ray to check it. So while he may poke you a bit he really is running blind as he can only guess where the X-Ray offers hard proof which tooth and where.

Hi there, I just opened the box of a brand new MacBook Air M2 and had the same experience- the battery was flat and nothing happened when I flipped it open. Once I attached it to power it started as it should. I’m busy charging it now.

I’m keen to try CoconutBattery to check the state of the battery. Is anyone still able to help me interpret the outcome?

If much appreciate your help!
