My MacBook Air will not turn on

I have a MacBook Air late 2018 (A1932) that I got in May 2019 which suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago. I used it two days before, shut it down and then it never turned on again. I brought it to the Apple Genius Bar and they tested out the battery, tried a different charging cable, did all the basic tests that they could but could not determine the problem. They suggested changing the logic board for 700$+.

Since I have some valuable data on there, I am not ready to try anything that might erase the SSD.

I opened it up and all looks ok, nothing is loose, no water damage, looks brand new.

I realized that the haptics on the trackpad work when it’s seemingly turned on, and my phone also charges. Also I have heard the fan come on for 2 seconds at a time but then nothing. There are no lights on the caps lock or the lighted keyboard. The haptics stop working when I drain the battery or when I do the CTRL+Option+Shift+power key combination.

the only damage I have is a small crack on the bottom edge of the screen which happened when something small got lodged in there and it cracked when closing it.

I have also tried plugging it into another monitor with a USB-C to HDMI cable but no luck. My external keyboard also didn’t light up.

I am curious about the trackpad « clicking » and wonder if there is any hope that it’s not the logic board that is the problem. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

the lcd is probably dead. the cable might have been damaged when whatever object got lodged in it or it could’ve damaged the inverter. either way what kind of geniuses do they have at apple that they didn’t consider an lcd replacement? did you notice the screen connector/wire when you opened it? Maybe the connection came loose since they are extremely delicate. I say check the video cable/connector and see if it looks like there’s any physical damage on the screen itself, front or back. I saw this a lot in my repair business. It could be as simple as a loose connection to a dead inverter, which you’d have to replace the whole screen. Hope you can fix it!

Thank you! I’ll have a closer look inside but at first glance I didn’t see anything apparent. I am thinking to take it to a local repair shop and hope they can do a bit more checking than Apple did. They said they are not technicians and only proposed changing the logic board which in turn would mean I lose my data.

Question about the LCD, if that is the issue, would I not have some sense of coming to life, like lights on the keyboard or hearing something inside? And would a 2nd monitor not work? Is it possible to post pictures here?

Thanks again!! :)

@nikkyrichard - What happens when you plug in an external display with the display lid closed, does it work then?

из

@danj With the lid open or closed, I get no signal on an external monitor using the HDMI to USB-C cable

из

@nikkyrichard - Ouch! With no external display this doesn’t look good☹️

You likely need the logic board repaired or replaced as well as the display.

@danj :( :( I’ll take it to our local repair shop, fingers crossed. Needless to say that I am very disappointed that an Apple product hasn’t even lasted 3 years……
