Dead display and external display connection

The computer will start ok and i have successfully connected it to another through firewire and can use the hard drive that way. however, the display is completely black and i can't use the external diplay connection either. i have replaced the LED Driver Board already, but problem is still there. can this be something other than a bad logic board?

As David suggess your Macbook pro could meet the Apple Repair Extension Program if you have the Nvidia 8600 GPU in your MBP. Call Apple and give them your MBP serial number. If you're not eligible for the Apple program you may search for a specialised electronic shop in your area that would reflow your GPU.

I concur - if you get no video from both the built-in display and an external display, then this points to an issue with the GPU. You might check this Knowledge Base article and see if your unit meets the model specs for the Repair Extension Program:

could be the graphics card chip. ive had a 65 percent success rate on taking a piece of foil, with a square cut out the size of the g-chip, and heating it up with a heatgun til the chip gets hot and reseats... then put the logic board back in the computer and see if that helped. its a tricky process.... but does work on occasion.

I have a Macbook Air mid-2013 model with the same problem. I dropped it and now the display just gives me colourful vertical lines and I cannot use the thunderbolt port for external displays. However, initially after the drop, video output to external displays was working for a few hours. Then it stopped working and I brought it to a shop who did something which got it working again for a few days and now it's not working. I don't care about getting the internal display to work - I just want to get video output to external displays working.

I'm not sure how to locate the GPU to try this "heating" method described here... could someone please tell me how to find this chip? I've googled it in many ways but to no avail...

A better way of heating the chip, is to use a small metal disc, about the size of 1 1/2" placed on top of the video chip. I used a work bench metal stop block, then used a propane torch and aimed it at the top metal post. Not near the chip. The heating of the post heated the chip and I had success getting the second output working on the ibook. The internal one did not come back, put you have a working computer. Just use a VGA monitor a your screen.
