Why would people buy a corroded logic board?

I go on eBay a lot to look for logic boards to repair broken MacBooks and I notice that some people put up water damaged logic boards and they even say it doesn't work. So why would they post it hoping someone to buy it, what can you do with a completely broken logic board? I've even see people bid on it. What is the use of a broken logic board that they sometimes will mention as corroded? Is it possible to repair such problem?

We end up with a lot of broken electronics and have found a few uses for them:

* If you want to practice soldering it's nice to have a real board to play with.

* We've used many of our broken parts for art projects. Kids love to play with the electronics. Just make sure they're old enough to know not to eat them & not to throw it in the garbage.

* Some patient people have scavenged through our "broken" parts and created working franken-iPods at Maker Faire. Many broken items have functional parts if you break them up more.

In general tho I would never pay for any non-functional electronics, they're usually a hassle to get rid of safely.

I guess that makes sense, for recycling purposes, or even advanced repair. One more thing, you caught my attention with this "Maker Faire." Tell me more about this or where I can go to learn more about this.

Make magazine is a favorite DIY company. They have an annual faire that we have exibited at in the past. It's a lot of fun to go to. You should check it out!

I can't really think of a legitimate reason, I can think of a couple of nefarious reasons.

IMO not worth trying to repair a corroded logic board, but I would guess some people might buy them to salvage individual components i.e. desolder and remove components that might still be working - especially if some of them are hard to find

otherwise, some companies recycle and recover metals from scrap circuit boards - including gold, silver, etc. but I'm not sure those guys buy off ebay unless the boards are really cheap and being sold as scrap.

Broken electronics are a pain to get rid of, and some people might try to make a profit, while getting rid of dead parts. I have two dead PowerBook G4's and the only thing i could sell were the screens. I kept the Drives (For security) and took out the ram, and not they are sitting in a closet.
