2015 MPB only boots up after battery&power disconnected for a few sec

Analysis:

  • Friend's MBP fails to turn on when pressing power button.
    • Note: Magsafe light is green on charger
  • Attempted numerous resets eg SMC etc as per MacBook Won't Turn On with no impact
    • Note: Also no response/haptic feedback on touchpad during attempts
  • No signs of corrosion or physical damage on logic board
    • I have not taken out of case and inspected other side however.
  • After 10+ seconds of battery and power disconnected, and then power reconnected the mac boots up fine. Keyboard/mouse seem to be working fine.
  • Able to hard shutdown pressing power button.
  • From here-on-in, I'm unable to get it to boot again from pressing the power button, only disconnecting battery briefly, and reconnecting power.
  • Was able to press "D" after reconnecting power.
    • Diagnostic report stated no issues "adp000".
  • As per above, after booting up macOS, then shutdown again, I have no luck in getting it to power on again from the power button

I'm pulling my hair out with what else to try? Any suggestions?

Thanks

@danj I have some good news. I think I may have narrowed down the fault.

As expected (as per first post), the diagnostic report showed no errors with "adp000".

I then took out the logic board completely to inspect the other side of the board. No corrosion or concerns observed.

I then continued googling, and watching the odd Louis Rossman video but no further guidance.

I then came across two things which appears to show the issue:

So - what's the problem?

  • There appears to be an issue with no bootup/"power on" caused by a fault with the trackpad or trackpad flex cable
    • Disconnecting the Flex cable for the trackpad results in the MBP consistently powering up correctly, and shutting down correctly after multiple attempts.
      • Note: Despite the keyboard being connected, no keys other than the power button work in this state. Reconnecting the trackpad results in the rest of keyboard working again, however as highlighted by the issues observed on this forum post, then the whole laptop won't cold boot again via power button.

So, to summarize:

If an A1502 2015 13" Macbook Pro is failing to boot or show any signs of life other than magsafe being orange/green, try disconnecting the trackpad flex cable, and see if the the MBP successfully turns on via the power button.

To be confirmed in my case - Whether replacing the flex cable will be enough, or also require trackpad replacement.

Thanks,

Matt

@mattread22819 - To be clear you had a twofer!

You needed a battery and the trackpad as well. Often we face more than one problem. But without addressing both in a logical way you can’t expose the other.

So you has a spill or the cleaner you used seeped in which I’ve see a few times as people spray the surfaces instead of the cloth which is the correct approach. This the more common issue. The cable can get damaged when the battery is on it’s last legs as the swelling causes the cable to be pushed into the bottom cover and and grit it has can slowly damage the cable andor the constant flex stresses the cable.

What you are seeing is SMC going into a latched state as it thinks the system has a major failure

Let’s see if CoconutBattery gives us a clue. Take a snapshot of the apps main window posting it here. Make sure the charger is plugged in and the LED is Amber.

Sorry your battery has just run out of steam!

Note the number of cycles is over 1000 which is the limit also note the age of the battery is over eight years.

Thanks @Dan. Appreciated!

Is it typical that Macs will fail to boot past the charge cycle limit? I'm guessing Apple pre-emptively stop Macs booting past that point, given the MBP is still able to get several hours of battery life in its current state (despite being "degraded"). I can appreciate it's currently only operating on 64% of design capacity.

Basically are you confident replacing the battery will actually fix this issue? Happy to do so, but it's an expensive exercise if it doesn't address.

It's a shame Macs don't just show "hey - I'm no longer going to boot cause your battery sucks!" if it's the reason :-)

Thanks again

@mattread22819 - The issue is the batteries Voltage! Not Apple obsolescence programming.

Lithium Ion batteries chemistry is not infinite! It has both a cycle limit and age limit. You’re two for two here.

Hi @danj

Thanks for the assistance thus far, but unfortunately after purchasing a new battery and following the same reproduction steps, there has been no change.

I can confirm with the previous steps to get back into MacOS that coconut battery is looking good and reporting the correct things for the new battery (cycle count, capacity and state) so I believe the battery may be a red herring.

Do you have any other suggestions for trouble shooting or debugging this issue further?

Thanks,

Matt

@mattread22819 - No, not a red herring, you did need the battery. I was hoping that would fix things alone. Besides the age (max of five years) the cycle count is over it max Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops

I need to see what Coconut is telling us. Make sure the charger is plugged in what you do the snapshot.

If you can let’s try to get the onboard diagnostics running. Restart your system and press the D key to enter, let us know the errors that come back
